College construction substandard work irks Labour Minister Nyalonje

Minister of Labour, Agnes NyaLonje, has expressed disappointment with substandard construction works of Mtowe Community Technical College in Nsanje District.

NyaLonje said it is worrisome that the technical college failed to be finalised unlike other colleges in Machinga and Chiradzulu districts after being allocated equal budgets.

“It is surprising that other colleges in the same category were finalised and are of good quality using the same allocated resources and remaining with few final touches but Mtowe Technical College has a long way to be completed.

“Further, it is of poor quality such that some structures have already developed cracks,” she said after touring the project on Friday.

She said her ministry will investigate matters surrounding the project.

NyaLonje was surprised that the contractor went with a certificate of completion and a lot of money was paid yet constriction hasn’t been finalised.

“We have so many questions; what happened? Where is the money for the project? Who allowed this to happen? Those questions have to be answered,” said NyaLonje.

She has warned that government will not tolerate any negative issue in government projects.

She, therefore, called upon the people of Nsanje to actively participate in project implementation as one way of ensuring quality in projects.

The Minister has promised the people of Nsanje that government will make sure that the project is completed so that the youth in the district should benefit as others are doing.

Nsanje District Council Chairperson, Mike Kafalachi, said for a long time the district has been a victim of substandard construction works and there is need for government to task contractors who offer substandard work.

Kafalachi revealed that Nsanje District Council was not involved in any way regarding construction of the college which started in 2019.

Newly installed incinerator in Zomba to start operating soon

Ministry of Health, with support from the Global Fund, has installed an incinerator at Zomba Central Hospital designed for high volume waste management at the facility as well as other health facilities surrounding the district.

Minister of Health, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, and officials from the Global Fund visited the site earlier this week to appreciate the installation progress.

After touring the works for the housing of the incinerator machine, the Minister was satisfied with the progress which has been made so far.

“I am very satisfied with this incinerator housing. As you are aware that when managing a hospital, you get infectious waste in different forms and as such waste management is a very important part of hospital management.

“That is why we have to be strict on how we manage each and every waste which comes from the hospital from our patients and medical supplies which we use. At Zomba Central Hospital, waste management was really problematic and I am sure that once this machine starts operating it will make a change.

“We had to ask for the support from the Global fund and they supported us. This is why we are here inspecting. The installation of incinerator is almost finished,” said Chiponda.

She said by using the machine, it will protect the surroundings and even the environment.

Zomba Central Hospital Director, Dr Saulos Nyirenda, thanked Government of Malawi and the Global Fund for the initiative.

Nyirenda explained that the incinerator will be beneficial to more than 15 health facilities surrounding Zomba Central Hospital saying the current way of managing the waste at the hospital is not optical.

“The main problem that we have now is that we use the traditional way of burning waste but waste from the hospital includes metals, and heavy duty plastics so we use diesel or petrol to burn these things and it does not generate enough heat to completely burn the materials. It is risky for both our workers and the community.

“With this machine, we will be able to completely burn waste into ashes. As such, we will create a safe place for our people and the environment,” he said.

Programme Manager for Global Fund, Doreen Sanje, said they have been supporting Government of Malawi since 2003 and will continue to do so.

“We are still committed to supporting Malawi and what is important is to ensure that the resources given should be used satisfactorily,” she said.

Police officer arrested for stealing workmates’ motorbikes

Malawi Police in Lilongwe are keeping in custody one of their officers for allegedly stealing two motorbikes from his workmates at C Division in the Capital.

Lilongwe Police Public Relations Officer Hastings Chigalu says the suspect Nokesi Kashitiyano,31, did the offence in December last year when his colleague the owner of the bike was deployed for guard duties at area 10 in Lilongwe.

He says the case was reported by his workmate after seeing his bike with a Kabaza operator.

“The Kabaza operator referred him to the owner who disclosed that he bought it from the police officer who accepted to have stolen the bike at the said place,while still questioning him another police officer came and disclosed that his motor vehicle also went mission at the station in the same way,”says Chigalu.

Kashitiyano hails from Mgona village Traditional Authority(T/A) Tengani in Nsanje.

Chimwendo asks Dausi, Chitsulo to join MCP

Minister of Local Government who is also Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Director of Youth Richard Chimwendo Banda has asked expelled DPP NGC member Nicholas Dausi not to get worried following his expulsion from the DPP, saying the MCP is well prepared to warmly welcoming him back.

Chimwendo has also extended the invitation to DPP Member of Parliament (MP) for Mwanza West Constituency Joyce Chitsulo telling the two, Dausi and Chitsulo that MCP is not a family party, it is a national party saying it has an office for all its affairs and not using someone’s house as an office.

Speaking during a Development rally addressed by President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera in Mwanza on Friday, Chimwendo said Dausi was expelled from the DPP for no offense claiming that he asked for the construction of a stadium and other projects in Mwanza but the DPP failed despite of him being a cabinet minister.

Chimwendo said Dausi was not alone to ask for a sports stadium, Mark Katsonga Phiri asked for the same but their Party did nothing only promising lies for years until President Chakwera came and is fulfilling the development projects failed by the previous DPP in government.

“Chakwera is walking in the footsteps of Ngwazi Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda spreading development projects across the country even in areas which did not vote for him,” he said.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) District Youth Governor for Lilongwe Urban speaking on a strict condition of anonymity, has thanked Chimwendo Banda for publicly opening doors to those who have been expelled and suspended from the DPP to join the MCP.

The Governor said it is the wish of the party to see to it that all who have been expelled and suspended from the party joins the MCP claiming that they have been working with the MCP inside and outside Parliament to make sure that the DPP goes to the 2025 elections without a presidential candidate.

He said sanity has now come to stay in the mighty DPP following the expulsion and suspension of some of the party’s members advising all that if they have political muscles, they should join their MCP other than continue fighting with the DPP as this will take them nowhere.

The Governor has assured all the expelled and suspended members that the DPP remains a strong party and is poised to win the 2025 elections with or without castigations and insults from expelled members claiming that some of the members have already started advising Malawians not to vote for the DPP anymore.

“Just join the MCP or form your political party, don’t dream that your departure will divide DPP members, genuine DPP members are with the party and cannot follow you to the MCP,” he said.

The Governor has since appealed to all DPP patriotic members not to be shaken by failed politicians who are doing everything possible that infighting continues in the DPP assuring all that DPP under Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika will defeat President Chakwera even if elections are held today or tomorrow.

Kalindo condoles 6 families in Area 24-Lilongwe

Political activist Bon Elias Kalindo has condoled families of six individuals of Area 24 in Lilongwe who have died following a road accident at Nature Sanctuary when a vehicle in which they were traveling in loaded with relief maize from Bingu National Sports Stadium was involved in an accident.

Kalindo has described the death of these six individuals as very sad coming at a time many family households are sleeping with empty stomachs because their pockets cannot afford to cough out K5,000 for a pail of 5Litre maize.

Poor people are contributing money to hire vehicles carrying relief maize to their homes.

He said these individuals were coming from Bingu Stadium after receiving relief maize which government is distributing across the country lamenting that poor people are walking long distances to Bingu Stadium, Civo Stadium and Kanengo Police Station to receive a bag of relief maize each.

Speaking through an audio clip circulating in various social media platforms, Kalindo has claimed that this accident which has claimed lives of six people on the same spot could have been avoided if the government identified places within their localities to receive relief maize.

Kalindo said poor people are contributing money for transport to ferry the maize from the distribution centres to their respective homes advising the government to reduce distance beneficiaries are walking to distribution centres for them to sing a good song of the praising government.

“Being President of the poor people in Malawi, I am sudden by the untimely death of these six people, may all the families receive my heartfelt condolences for the loss,” he said.

Kalindo has reminded all political parties in Malawi that 50+1 majority win was put in place by the court pleading with the legal practitioners to visit, review and make amendments in time for each and every party to have their own torchbearer on the ballot.

He said a big lesson has been drawn from MCP-UTM Alliance where Dr. Saulosi Klaus Chilima is being taken as a useless person besides sponsoring the MCP through the ballot advising all of its members to vote for President Chakwera.

The activist has claimed that he was receiving many calls from the MCP on the Alliance formation while he was UTMs Director of Youth not knowing that the MCP had a hidden agenda to fool Dr. Chilima and use him as a ladder to advance their political position in government.

He has made it clear that Malawians are being taken for granted by the MCP led Tonse Alliance government observing that it has completely forgotten that without Dr. Chilima, President Chakwera would not have been in government today.
