Mwanamveka, Dausi Plundering case adjourned

The case aimed at committing to the financial crimes court the matter involving former cabinet in the ministers in the DPP regime, Joseph Mwanamvekha, Nicholas Dausi and three others accused of plundering public resources, has been adjourned to Friday, July 7, 2023.

It has emerged that at the time the proceedings started, the law stipulated that the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) could only prosecute with consent from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), and that consent has not yet been obtained.

Defence lawyer Cassim Chidothi says he sees no basis of commit to a he Financial Crimes Court a case involving former Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamveka, former Homeland Security Minister Nicholas Dausi and three others.

Meanwhile, Chief Resident Magistrate Court in Lilongwe has since given the ACB up to Friday this week to present a letter seeking consent from the Director of Public Prosecutions before the case gets committed to the Financial Crimes Court.

However, the ACB said they wrote a letter seeking consent from the DPP but did not get any response, nor the consent.

The case has since been adjourned for the ACB to present the letter they wrote to the DPP which means that if they do, the committal proceedings will proceed on Friday.

Mwanamvekha and Dausi are being accused in connection with a multi-billion kwacha procurement contract at Malawi Prison Services where they are suspected of purchasing items that included socks, underwear, steel plates, cups, cuffs, belts and whistles between February 2019 and June 2020 without following procedures.

Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) says investigations showed that the former finance minister abused his office to approve the payment without considering the urgency and importance of the said equipment.

Chimwendo Banda donates K1 million to Chitipa United FC

Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Richard Chimwendo Banda, Saturday donated K1 million to Chitipa United Football Club to alleviate some of the challenges the team is facing.

Banda also hosted the team to a luncheon on Sunday in Karonga on its way to base from Lilongwe after drawing 0-0 with Silver Strikers.

He said that he doesn’t want to see Chitipa United being relegated due to financial challenges, hence the donation.

“Chitipa United FC is displaying excellent soccer tactics and by defeating two local giants, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers and FCB Nyasa Big Bullets it’s no mean achievement. Today they drew with Silver Strikers,” Banda said.

He added that he will embark on an initiative to fundraise for the Lions of Chitipa so that the team is motivated and make to the top of the league.

Senior Chief Mwabulambya who received the donation on behalf of the team’s management, applauded Banda for good gesture, which he said is wealth emulating.

General Secretary for Chitipa United FC, Duma Ngoma, applauded Chimwendo Banda and appealed to companies and individuals to come forward and sponsor the team.

DPP governing council meeting underway as party risks being dragged to court for contempt

The former ruling party, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) risks being dragged to court for contempt as it proceeds with plans to hold a National Governing Council (NGC) meeting. The party gurus have gathered today at Nkopola Lodge in Mangochi .

Last week, some members had obtained an injunction restraining the party from holding the said NGC meeting on June 24, but now DPP through spokesperson Shadric Namalomba claims that the said order was stayed by the Supreme Court of Appeal, hence the meeting.

“I can confirm that the NGC meeting is on. It is not against any court order because the Supreme Court of Appeal stayed that order so we are not braking any law. The meeting will proceed,” Namalomba told Nation Online.

But in response to Namalomba’s remarks, lawyer for the members who obtained the injunction, Wapona Kita also told Nation Online that they have not been served with any Stay Order, and DPP will be dragged to court for contempt if it continues with the meeting.

Said Kita to Nation Online: “We have just been seeing the said order in the social media, but my clients have not been served. So for us, that order does not exist and should the party proceed with the NGC meeting, we have clear instructions to file for contempt of court.

“We also have instructions to obtain an injunction against implementation of any decision that could be made during the said meeting. So for us, our injunction stands, and any act to the contrary will be taken as contempt.”

Today’s planned NGC meeting, among other things, is expected to set a date and venue for the party’s National Elective Conference(NEC) where the party will elect its presidential candidate for the 2025 elections, among other positions.

And according to Namalomba, this NGC is the first step in the Party’s resolve to prepare for victory in 2025.

Meanwhile,the NGC meeting is coming at a time when mandates for the NGC members are set to expire this month, according to the party’s constitution.

Tributes pour in for journalist Jean Yona Nkata

Tributes are pouring for one of the country’s journalists Jean Yona Nkata.

In a statement, MISA Malawi Chairperson Golden Matonga says Nkata died on Sunday, July 2, 2023 at St Gabriel Hospital in Lilongwe.

“The media fraternity is deeply saddened by the untimely departure of a humble and hardworking colleague.

“Jean enjoyed the warmth of interacting with colleagues and others.

“May the good Lord comfort her family during this difficult moment. May Jean’s soul rest in eternal peace,” says Matonga in a statement.

Until her death, Jean was a presenter at Blantyre Synod Radio (BSR).

She joined BSR in March this year from Centre for Solution Journalism(CSJ) .

The female journalist also worked for Galaxy FM, Channel for All Nations and as an intern at Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).

She joined the industry in 2010.

Vigil is at her family home at Biwi in Lilongwe and burial is on Tuesday, July 4, 2023 at Area 18 cemetery in Lilongwe.

MCP to build a K300 million party structure in Karonga

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) on Saturday launched construction of a state-of-the-art building in Karonga which will house the party’s offices, a restaurant and a library, among others.

The K300 million worth of building, to be named Dunduzu Chisiza, is expected to be completed in 18 months.

MCP Secretary General, Eisenhower Mkaka said in an interview that the building will not only serve as a regional office but also host the district offices with other rooms being rented out to interested people to use them for their businesses.

“What we are doing today is to build on the foundations which were laid by our founders. It must be appreciated that MCP founders laid a very good foundation.

“That is why MCP remains the only party with its own structures from the grassroots level,” Mkaka said.

He said the construction of party offices is likely to be replicated in other districts.

North-North Regional Chairman, Kezzie Msukwa expressed gratitude saying the construction of the party offices is a milestone as the current office structure is dilapidated.

“We have launched the project that will see us have a magnificent office. We are honoured to have the building named Dunduzu Chisiza, one of the long members of MCP” Msukwa said.

Msukwa appealed to party members to take ownership of the project by contributing towards its construction and making sure that all resources meant for the project should be put to proper use.
