Minister Usi says COP28 trip to United Arab Emirates not funded by Govt

Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change, Michael Usi says government has not sponsored any accredited government officials to the United Nations Conference of Parties (COP 28) scheduled for Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, from November 30 to December 12, 2023.

Briefing the media in Lilongwe on Monday, Usi said a total of 153 Malawian delegates including government officials, the civil society, the academia and youth representatives are going to attend the meeting under sponsorship from various United Nations agencies, development partners, and the private sector.

“The President was supposed to attend the conference but he has delegated me, this is an indication that we are heeding to the austerity measures put in place by the President.

“In addition, all officials at the conference are going to account for their trip,” he said.

Usi indicated that the COP28 is a pivotal platform for Malawi to engage with world leaders on how to address pressing challenges posed by climate change.

He said :”Our presence at this summit is not merely symbolic, it is also an opportunity for Malawi to actively contribute to the global discourse on climate action.”

He further said Malawi acknowledges the global nature of climate change, hence the need for collective and inclusive response to issues of climate change.

The Minister added that Malawi will therefore, play a part to contribute towards formulation of policies and work towards consensus building to ensure that the outcomes of COP28 reflect the shared responsibility of all nations.

“Our delegation will engage in constructive dialogues, share our experiences and seek collaboration with other nations to enhance our adaptive capacities,” Usi said.

COP28 is a gathering of representatives from different countries who agree to take actions of tackling the climate crisis and Malawi is a party to that.

Malawi’s priority areas of discussion at the conference include climate finance, loss and damage, building adaptation and resilience, agriculture, food security and nutrition, among others.

FAM rebuffs Nyamilandu’s appeal to have his competitor in FAM presidential elections disqualified

The Electoral Committee managing Football Association of Malawi (FAM) December elections has rebuffed an appeal from incumbent President Walter Nyamilandu to disqualify his competitor Fleetwood Haiya from the race citing eligibility issues.

Nyamilandu through his lawyers, Makiyi, Kanyenda and Associates appealed against Haiya’s candidature saying he is not eligible to contest as President because he has not resigned from his positions as Super League of Malawi (SULOM) President and as one of the directors for FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Football Club, which is against the eligibility criteria as per FAM statutes.



Argued Nyamilandu in his appeal:”Accordingly, Mr Fleetwood Haiya, by operation of lawi s automatically ineligible and disqualified to participate as a candidate for the post of FAM President or to participate as a candidate for any other post in the elections for FAM executive committee.”

But the Electoral Committee which is being headed by private practice lawyer, James Masumbu, dismissed the case for late submission.

The response in our possession,says the appeal should have been filed no later than 21 November, 2023, but Nyamilandu submitted it on 24 November, 2023.

Recently, FAM electoral body through Masumbu approved all the candidates nominated by affiliates for various positions in the polls.

“After the screening process, the electoral committee approved names of the nominated candidates for the 2023 FAM executive committee elections,” said Masumbu.

Nyamilandu, who has been at the helm of FAM for the past 19 years, said he would be seeking re-election for the last time.

The elections will be held on December 16, 2023 in Mzuzu.

President Chakwera dreams of mega farms turning to reality

In February this year, President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera addressed Parliament in the Capital City Lilongwe.

His state of the nation address was tailored systematically to align with Malawi 2063 vision in which agriculture is named as the main enabler.

The President announced that his leadership intends to forego mare talking but rather to embark on full large scale mega farms establishment.

“My Administration has successfully embarked on mega farms aimed
at establishing large production units for increased agricultural production. We have already established two mega farms in Chipoka, Salima and Nkopola, Mangochi with 200 hectares of maize currently under cultivation in Mangochi and 80 hectares of cotton under cultivation and production
in Chipoka.

“Additionally, through the Agriculture Commercialisation (AGCOM) project, we have also allocated 6 million dollars to the Katunga Maseya Cooperative to invest in a Mega Sugarcane Farm in Chikwawa. It is also worth mentioning that other entities such as the Malawi Prison Services and Malawi Defence Force have established their own mega farms,” he said.

When Chakwera said that, people thought it was just a joke but as we are speaking he has already delivered on his statement.

Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale on Monday undertook two major activities on mega farms.

Kawale launched private sector mega farms facilities, 8 tractors. Apart from unveiling the tractors, Kawale opened 80 consultants training at the mega farm support unit centre in Kanengo, Lilongwe.

Kawale said the launch of these tractors is in line with president Dr Chakwera’s vision. He said the tractors will be distributed in all the ADDs.

He also said the Agri-consultants will be sent to work with Malawians interested in mega farms and commercial farming.

Nsonda says Malawi could have been worse off if DPP was still in power

Call it a brutal verdict. The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) National Governing Council member Ken Nsonda said Malawi would have been worse-off if the series of peril that have befallen Malawi in the last three years were happening while DPP was still in power.

Speaking on Zodiak Exclusive interview, Nsonda said he considers a blessings in disguise that the successive global shocks such as the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ukraine war, Cyclone Freddy and the Cholera outbreaks happened when DPP was out of power because things could have been out of hand by now.

He said: “I always tell people that the situation could have been worse if these natural disasters were happening when DPP was still in power. Ndipo a Mutharika sakanakwanitsa, akanakomoka,” said Nsonda

Nsonda said despite facing many set backs in the last three years, President Lazarus MacCarthy Ckawera has done a commendable job to steady the ship.

He said it is wrong to attribute problems Malawians are facing to President Chakwera. He said Chakwera assumed power when disasters were already weighing global economies down.

“It is not right to say that the problems we are facing in the country are caused by President Chakwera. The President has been a bit unfortunate in the last three years. These [Covid, Cholera, Cyclone Freddy] are natural disasters beyond his control and they could have happened anyway even if DPP was in power,” he said.

Nsonda’s comments are also a popular view among Malawians who think that Mutharika’s lack of leadership could have worsened the sufferings.

Malawi’s Grievin Stanford wins pool tournament in Zambia

Malawian Pool player Grievin Stanford popularly known as ‘Ginte’, last night emerged as the champion of the 3-day four nation Pool Tournament which took place in Zambia.

Stanford won the tournament after defeating Ugandan Ssejemba Ibra twice, in the Winners Bracket final and then the Grand Finale

The tournament which took place at Billards Café in Zambia, involved the countries of Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Malawi, and Uganda.



As the winner, Stanford received 50 thousand Zambian Kwacha which is equivalent to over 3 million Malawi Kwacha.

Meanwhile, Mangame properties and Sagetech Investments Ltd have offered to give the Pool Champion, a 15m × 30m plot in Matindi, Blantyre.
