By Chisomo Phiri

As Malawi continues facing job scarcity challenge, graduates have been challenged to create job for themselves rather than relying on formal employment.

Speaking on Wednesday at Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) during the graduation of 45 students who were studying certificates in electrical installation at the institution, MUBAS Head of ODeL Dr. Annie Tamara Chizengo said to avoid frustrations that come when graduates are not employed, it is good for them to start creating jobs for themselves.

She said :” You all know that nowadays unemployment levels are high and there are so many bad things happening to our frustrated graduates such as venturing into immoral behaviors. So to avoid such things here at MUBAS, we urge the graduating students to always focus on self-employment rather than formal employment.

“We impart in them entrepreneurship skills so that as they go out, they should be able to establish and run their own businesses and in so doing creating for jobs themselves and even their friends.”

Chizengo assured that MUBAS will not stop introducing programmes that can promote self-employment among the youths in the country.

“We have so many programmes here at MUBAS that are aimed at empowering graduates to be self-employed. We want graduates who are able to create jobs for themselves and contribute to the country’s social-economic development,” she said.

On his part, one of the graduating students Kelvin Mwikhoma said he is ready to start his own business using the knowledge he has gained from the institution.

“As a graduate, I will not wait for someone or a company to employ me.I have gained much knowledge in electrical installation here and I will use that to open up my business,” said Mwikhoma.

Unemployment rate in Malawi decreased to 5.60 percent in 2022 from 5.70 percent in 2021.

President of Muvi wa Chilungamo Revolutionary Party (MRP) Bantu Saunders Jumah, has invited all Malawians regardless of their political party affiliations to be the Jury for the country to return to constitutional order so that elections are held on 21st May, 2024 not September, 2025.

Jumah said constitutionally Members of Parliament (MPs) are to serve for a period of 5 years in office and have extended their term of office by another one year to make it 6 years in office describing this as unconstitutional.

Muvi wa Chilungamo

He has since asked Malawians where will the country get money to pay these MPs who have extended their term of office for another one year urging Malawians to do whatever is possible to bring the country back to constitutional order.

Speaking through his face book page widely followed by millions of people in Malawi and Africa, Jumah has asked Malawians a question that are they ready to accept this unconstitutional order for elections to be held in September, 2025?

Jumah said time to correct mistakes for the country is now expressing fears that if Malawians do not correct this unconstitutional order, the country will be a failed one meaning that it has politicians who are above the law and are taking the citizens for granted.

He said politics of deniability is what is killing Malawi for it not to develop because it has leaders who do not fear the voters claiming that leaders do not accept their mistakes and apologize for the mistakes or wrongs to do better.

The MRP President said in 1997 former President and Malawi’s Founding Father Ngwazi Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda apologized to the nation that he did not know that some other people were carrying out atrocities under his name apologizing to Malawians for the atrocities committed.

He said for 10 years, former President Dr. Bakili Muluzi ran the country un deniability by accepting challenges rocking the country but 19 years after Muluzi, the country is in political deniability with its leaders covering the mess.

“Malawi needs politicians; men and women who can accept the wrong doing and learn to apologize, failure has no weather, not to using the country for trial and error, “said Jumah.

He said Malawi leaders have been blaming Covid-19 pandemic, Tropical Cyclones including Freddy, cholera outbreak and the Russia-Ukraine war as contributing factors making the country fail to develop saying any leader, government, President who cannot accept mistakes, no development for the country.

Jumah has appealed to Malawians not to lose heart, not to give up but moving forward assuring them that the Revolution has come to stay in Malawi, Malawi will not be the same saying very soon or later, the country will be liberated from politicians who use politics of deniability.

Leader of New Liberation Party Isaiah Sunganimoyo, says Vatican is ruling the world faulting Catholic Bishops in Malawi that they cannot say “no” to what Rome has directed them to do meaning that same-sex couples will be blessed in all Parishes and churches of the Roman Catholics.

Sunganimoyo said even though the Catholic Bishops have assured Malawians in their Pastoral Letter of 19th December, 2023 that marriage remains the union between a man and a woman naturally open to the generation of children, they will still bless same-sex unions because it is a law of obedience.

Pope Francis

He said the Vatican Council has agreed permitting Catholic Priests to bless same-sex marriages observing that this will be applied to Malawi Catholic Bishops, Priests, Brothers and Sisters to be tested on their faith on the law of obedience to the Pope.

Speaking through a video clip circulating in various social media platforms, Sunganimoyo has faulted Malawians wrong for taking him as a mad person and a man who knows nothing claiming that on 22ndSeptember, 2012 he made a prophecy that Pope Benedict will step down on his own accord.

Sunganimoyo said his prophecy was let to come true that on 12th March, 2016 Pope Benedict announced to the world that he has stepped down claiming that his prophecy was made at Chilinde Parish in Lilongwe.

He has claimed that he is a devoted Catholic member and he knows the Catholic teachings dismissing claims which have been made by other people that he should stop commenting on issues affecting Roman Catholic Church not knowing that he is a Catholic.

The self-spoken man of God said from 2000 he enjoys support from the Vatican while other people in Malawi take his prophecy as useless as coming from a mad person advising Malawians that him knows what is inside the Catholic Church.

“What I speak bears nothing but the truth, today you have seen that the Roman Catholic Church can change everything, the Pope’s Pastoral Letter is in all the countries around the globe,” said Sunganimoyo.

He has reminded Malawians that on 13th July, 2023 Civil Society Organizations, Catholic Bishops, Sheikhs and church organizations joined by their followers held peaceful protests in Lilongwe against legalization of same-sex marriage in Malawi.

Sunganimoyo said on that day he described the demonstrations as time wasting claiming that what the Roman Catholic has made nobody can turn it down observing that his video clip was criticized by many referring him as man-made Saturn.

The Malawi Government through Department of Agricultural Research Services has banned the importation of maize from Kenya and Tanzania pending risk analysis as the two countries have a devastating disease called Maize Lethal Necrosis.

In a statement 247 Malawi News has in possession, Agricultural Research Services Director Grace Kaudzu says the disease, that has no treatment and causes up to 100 percent yield loss, is under official control.

“In view of this, its presence in the aforementioned countries necessitated the suspension of any importation of whole grain until appropriate phytosanitary measures are established.

“In the interim, the commodity can only be imported milled, either as flour or grit,” says Kaudzu in a statement.

She says the disease viruses are transmitted by planting maize grain with the virus or through the vectors such as strips which are available in Malawi.

The 2023 Global hunger Index (GHI) in Malawi revealed that the country is facing serious hunger levels.

It ranked Malawi on position 88 out of 125 countries assessed in the index.

And an assessment by Fews Net in September this year showed that the national maize stock in both local and Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMRC) markets had significantly decreased.

Traders were reporting access to less than half of their required stocks.

Then, the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) held only around 56,000 metric tonnes in mid-October, relative to their target of 217,000 metric tonnes.

And the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) estimated need of 164,000 metric tonnes for humanitarian assistance during the lean season.

The Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee’s report indicated that at least 4.4 million people would face hunger until March 2024
