Flames Coach Mario Marinica has named a 27 member final squad for the 2023 AFCON Qualifiers against Egypt.                  Â
Malawi faced Egypt back to back starting with away on Friday March 24 at Stadium Air Defence in Cairo and then at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on Tuesday March 28.
Apart from the local based players, the squad also include foreign based players like Dennis Chembezi,Yamikani Chester,Chikoti Chirwa,Peter Banda,John Banda, Francisco Madinga,Khuda Myaba and Gabadinnho Mhango.
The team has since moved from their camping base Meddina, Saudi Arabia to Cairo.
All roads this Tuesday March 21, leads to Mibawa Multi-purpose Hall in Blantyre for a charity music concert organized by Musicians Union of Malawi(MUM) and Mibawa Television to raise funds for cyclone Freddy survivors.
Malawi has been hit by the deadliest cyclone which has ravaged most districts in the Southern Region resulting in the deaths of over 438 people, with the number expected to rise as the rescue mission continues.
In view of this, MUM decided to organize a charity concert, to join well wishers who have been helping the victims since the devastating cyclone.
One of the organizers Denis Kalimbe of Ndirande Anglican Voices says as musicians they thought it wise to use their talent in mobilizing funds and items to help those impacted by the disaster.

“There are many of our brothers and sisters who are in dire need of assistance in the form of food, clothes, shelter and medical supplies. We the artists are there to join other well wishers in helping our fellow Malawians in this difficult time,” he said.
The fundraising concert will feature performances from both gospel and secular musicians in the country.
Some of the artists expected to perform on the day include; The Ndirande Anglican Voices’, Dr Ethel Kamwendo Banda, King James Phiri, Favoured Martha, Princess Chitsulo, Limbani Simenti, Eliza Mponya,Steve Muliya,Thoko Suya,Gloria Mangong’a, Neligo Women’s Choir, Mabel Lwanda, Vin Chizuzu and the Mibawa Band .
The event which will be hosted by Blackjack and Rina will also include secular artists like Phyzix, Nepman, Gibo Pearson, Tuno , Pon G, Sam Smack, Waxy Kay,Lay B Salima, Wikise, Stich Fray,Tarill, Black Nina, Mells and Guntolah.
Malawi government has received 40,000 litres of jet fuel to help in rescue operations of people affected by Cyclone Freddy.
Minister of Education, Madalitso Kambauwa Wilima received the donation on behalf of president Lazarus Chakwera from Mozambican Ambassador, Elias Zimba who represented president Filipe Nyusi
According to Zimba, the fuel is meant for the helicopters deployed for rescue and provision of relief assistance to cyclone Freddy survivors.
According to the Department of Disaster Management (DODMA), over 438 people have died, 918 are injured and 282 are still missing.
Over 345,183 people have been displaced and living in temporary shelters following the devastating cyclone.
If politics are to be put aside for the national interest, Malawians will soon see the coming together of President Lazarus Chakwera and former heads of this country, Peter Mutharika, Joyce Banda, and Bakili Muluzi in a discussion of the way forward following the devastating state of the Southern Region districts left by Cyclone Freddy which hit the country a couple of days ago.
President Chakwera revealed about this during his national address on the update of the situation after he toured Mangochi district on Sunday, 19th March, 2023.
Addressing the nation from Kamuzu Palace in the capital Lilongwe on Sunday, March 19, President Chakwera said he has invited former Heads of State to have a Presidential caucus on the disaster.
“When I am back in the Southern region on Thursday for the aerial visit of disaster areas, I will also meet with Malawi’s former Heads of State whom I have personally invited to a Presidential caucus at Sanjika to discuss ways we can work together in responding to the disaster in the spirit of the ongoing operation, a spirit that says ” Tiyeni Tigwirane Manja.” Said President Chakwera.
Chakwera who earlier in the day visited victims of the cyclone in Mangochi district told the nation that from his assessment, people of Mangochi need urgent help just like other affected districts, adding that what he observed during the visit at an evacuation camp at M’baluku in Mangochi talks more about the suffering the Cyclone has caused on the livelihood of the people of Mangochi.
In his address, President Chakwera pointed out howt the disaster has affected different social groups in different ways, saying there are thousands of children, expectant women, nursing women, elderly, and thousands of people with disabilities among others whom he said have specific needs apart from the common needs of the displaced Malawians.
Meanwhile, President Chakwera is expected to provide a report in Parliament on Wednesday on the State of the Disaster response before having an aerial tour of the areas from Thursday to appreciate the damage in other areas which he did not visit as they were not reachable due to roads problem caused by the cyclone.
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has promised to assist victims of Tropical Cyclone Freddy with proceeds from the NBS Bank Charity Shield and Malawi against Egypt AFCON qualifier slated for March 24.
FAM president Walter Nyamilandu says the association acknowledges the devastating effects of the cyclone in the Southern part of Malawi.
He says, as a good Corporate Citizen, FAM has decided to play an active role in mobilizing resources, to compliment efforts by the Malawi government, to mitigate the suffering of the victims.
The association has since resolved to donate proceeds of the 2023 NBS Bank FAM Charity Shield match between FCB Nyasa Bullets and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers on 9th April 2023 to the Cyclone Freedy Victims.
This year FAM and NBS Bank initially planned to target the education sector, after supporting the Victims of Cylone Idai with Charity Shield donation in 2022.
However after appreciating the extent of damage and the urgent need to support the thousands of people who are in pain and suffering, FAM has decided to channel all the proceeds this year to cyclone victims.

Among those affected by the devastation are football coaches McDonald Mtetemera and Enos Chatama, who lost their houses and properties due to the raging sweeping Cyclone Freddy waters in Blantyre.
Earlier this week, the football fraternity lost a promising football star Mhala Mpholia, who was playing for Genesis Football Acadamy, which plays in Blantyre and District Mmera Mpoyamba Under 16 League.
The 15-year-old died when his parents’ house was swept away in Manja township.
