0

Former Speaker Henry Chimunthu Banda who is also legislator for Nkhotakota North has endorsed Tonse Alliance presidential candidate Lazarus Chakwera ahead of the June 23 presidential elections.

Chimunthu made the announcement today in a move that has split opinions . The ruling DPP seems shocked at the timing of the announcement but many in the party seems not surprised as Chimunth has been on the sidelines for a long time.

Chimunthu said the decision to endorse the Tonse Alliance emanates from a need to change things for the better in the 2020 fresh presidential elections.“My constituents and I think time has come to do things a little bit differently,” said Chimunthu.

On his decision to leave the DPP, Chimunthu said his presence in the party was not being appreciated.

“We concluded that it is high time we accepted that we are not appreciated,” he said.

Chimunthu was the only other candidate who contested against Peter Mutharika at a DPP convention back in 2014 for the leadership of the party. A Month ago he was given a cabinet post , but he refused the post after claiming that he was not consulted prior to the appointment .

Chimunthu was DPP Secretary General as well as a cabinet during the Bingu wa Mutharika administration.

Chimunthu then took a five year break from politics before returning as a legislator after the 2019 elections.

Songbird Rudo Chakwera And Nic Thindwa teams up to drop hit single “Tipambana”

By Chalo Mvula

Songbird Rudo Chakwera, a household name in Malawi music circles has teamed up with Celebrated UK based music artist Nic Thindwa  to release a hit single  called “Tipambana”. The song which has officially been released this Friday is a timely boost for the Tonse alliance ahead of the presidential elections scheduled for the June 23rd.

Tipambana has been released as a thank you to the Tonse alliance leaders for coming together to form this great alliance. “Tipambana doesn’t only signify the belief that Tonse alliance will win the elections, but it is also a strong applause to leaders of all the nine political parties, that sacrificed their personal ambitions in order to come together for the good of Malawi “ said Thindwa.

The melodic voice of Rudo calls on Malawians that “Mu umodzi muli mphamvu , tikakhala amodzi tidzapambana. Pakhale chikondi pakati pathu, Malawi okomela tonse” a nicely fast paced song that starts in a slow ballad tempo before picking up pace.

This is not the first time that Rudo Chakwera has released a song with elements of political lyrics in it.  Famously known for gospel music, Rudo’s dip in political songs centres on promotion of unity despite people having political differences. Rudo, who also happens to be a daughter in law of presidential candidate Dr Lazarus Chakwera  had another political song which she did with  well known DPP supporter and Dancehall artist Anne Matumbi last year Titled “Malawi must be saved”

Rudo burst on the music scene in the 90’s, a daughter of the legendary Jazz artist Issac Mkukupha , she continues her music ministry and has over three albums to her name.

Birmingham based Thindwa has recently dropped a number of political themed singles. A well-known supporter of Tonse alliance, he has endorsed the candidacy of Dr Lazarus Chakwera and Dr Saulos Chilima in most of his latest singles with the latest one being Yalira Ng’oma which he released a few weeks ago

The latest song Tipambana has been done alongside Thindwa longtime music partner Pon G. The Music video for the  song is scheduled to drop on saturday

Winter may pose further risk for spread of COVID-19 in Malawi

0

The new winter season that Malawi is experiencing risks a rapid spread of COVID-19 across the country, Blantyre District Health Office (DHO) Chrissy Banda has said.

In an interview with Xinhua, Banda said that there is no direct relation between winter and COVID-19 but its results could have a huge impact.

“It is common during winter that people tend to stay indoors, this is going to affect issues of social distancing and ventilation requirements that were set by the Ministry of Health. In consideration with how our most homes are set up, we believe the risk of high transmissions will be high.

Every year during winter, Malawi experiences high cases of cold, cough and flu, with this trend, the DHO office believes that this will aid easy transmission of the virus with reference to the fact that the virus is commonly transmitted through fluid droplets, she said.

Similarly, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dr Dan Namalika said that Malawians need to take further measures to avoid the spread of the virus.

However, he pointed out that Malawi is doing well in the fight against COVID-19 and that there are less cases that are being transmitted locally. Enditem
