Chilima’s campaign an epitome of excellence – silencing Chimulirenji and keeping Bakili in hiding: Chalo’s sagacity

By Chalo Mvula

As I found myself sitting down and watching the final rally of Tonse alliance running mate Dr Saulos Chilima at Njamba  on that Saturday afternoon, one thing came to my mind. Here was a patriotic Malawian who was taking a bow after delivering yet another masterclass of campaigning.  It is a common secret now that Chilima is arguably one of the best Campaigners Malawi has ever had. Often times , politicians come and make their promises, others use handouts  to try to convince people to vote for them, but rarely do you find a politician  who blends in passion  for his country  like Chilima does.

But what makes Chilima tick  and connects well with the people? Well , he is a good orator. and an excellent communicator. Public speaking is not just about delivering a high pitched  statement to the people , it is about engaging the people, connecting with them so that they understand what you are saying  and connects with  what you are saying. Chilima speaks the language of the people, a boy in the village will connect to Chilima speech just as a boy in  town will. His ability to know his audience cannot be underestimated. Small things like speaking a little Tumbuka when he is in the North, some Yao or Lomwe when he is in the South  matters  and psychologically opens up the audience to welcome whatever he has to say. In summary he knows how to get the attention of his audience.

The 2020 Campaign has been an interesting one. It has probably worked to the advantage of Chilima as somebody from a Marketing and Sales background.  The alliances that were formed meant the parties had to sell a new brand at the back of their own political party brands.  Who can do it better than the master marketer himself Chilima? He knew that his party alliance with MCP was not 100% welcomed by his supporters and he knew he had a huge task to convince the disgruntled  and those who had no faith in the alliance. He knew, his message has to be cleverly crafted. As a salesman, he quickly devised a slogan “ Mfana oganiza bo!” There was so much power in this slogan, as it was a direct message to anyone who was doubting and questioning his decisions. It was a clear message to them that they should not worry as he’s had to take much careful thought in whatever decisions he has made.  It didn’t take long after this that all those who doubted him quickly got onboard of the alliance train.

The next task for Chilima was to sell the Tonse alliance brand. He had to make sure that his supporters didn’t feel like the promises that he made in his 2019 manifesto were now all gone . From this we saw Chilima embark on his usual whistle stops. Displaying so much vigour and energy, going into unreachable areas, he would do a number of whistle stops in a day . Visual representation matters and as such it was not surprising seeing Chilima carrying a bag of fertilizer on his shoulder while trying to hammer through his flagship promise of reducing fertilizer to K4495.00.  He cleverly used this opportunity as well, to introduce the candidacy of Dr Lazarus Chakwera to his loyal supporters.

Chakwera and Chilima

You can never be a strong politician if you cannot stand heat from your opponents. Stand out moments of Chilima campaign was his ability to hit back if opponents attack him with ungrounded accusations. One man to feel that wrath was a fella called Everton Chimulirenji. At Masintha, where Atupele Muluzi addressed a rally, Chimulirenji whose vice presidency ended after Court nullified  last year’s election results introduced himself as a campaign director of Mutharika/Atupele  team. Chimulirenji thought it was his opportunity to hit at Chilima, accusing Chilima that he is the one who made him lose his vice presidency when he went to court  to challenge last years election results .  Chilima has one word for Chimulirenji and that was a reminder that Malawi history will never remember Chimulirenji as Vice president. Poor Everton was not seen in public again since.

Another battle was between Chilima and former President Bakili Muluzi. Bakili unleashed silent war with Chilima. Initial arrangements  were  that Bakili would join Atupele on the campaign trail , Chilima unleashed a bombshell- accusing the former president of pocketing  over 500 thousands dollars from a foreign tobacco company deal. Infact Chilima threatened that Muluzi should pay back . What followed were attempts made on Chilima life with attacks on his convoy  in Phalombe and Liwonde that was allegedly engineered by Bakili .  While at a rally in Zomba , Chilima made another revelation, that Bakili had arranged for a Mr Mtenje to kill him when he goes to Mangochi. Well , in summary Bakili Muluzi never came out of his hiding place . Chilima’s public criticism of him and reminder of the corruption cases that he is due to answer made Muluzi  never dare to go public and campaign for his son Atupele.

The campaign is over and people will be voting , but Chilima should be applauded for delivering another excellent campaign. The patriotism he  showed  by  his display of the Malawi Flag and how he would do anything to defend the freedom of Malawians ,  the human side  that he showed  that just like any other person he can face threats  but has to stand  up and be fearless, his public display of his faith in God  and not forgetting his sacrifices for the good of Malawi in accepting to be a running mate to Dr Lazarus Chakwera. Chilima has once again proved that he is an asset to Malawi  and Malawian politics

Citizens For Transformation Movement (CFT) has called upon Malawi’ Electoral Commission to ensure that it conducts the fresh presidential election scheduled for Tuesday next week in a free, fair and credible manner. Speaking when it conducted a press briefing in Mzuzu, the Commander In Chief for the movement Comrade Timothy Mtambo said its now high time that Malawi starts to move forward as a nation and that the coming election is the one to decide, hence a need for MEC to handle it with all seriousness it deserves.

Mtambo who confidently told the media that CFT endorsed Chakwera-Chilima presidency on reasons to benefit all Malawians. In a statement titled ‘Highlighting the Path to Malawi’ Mtambo said the Mutharika government has completely failed Malawians and deserves no chance to be voted again . He said Mutharika has demonstrated to be the champion of violation of the rule of law and that his intention is to perpetuate looting of public resources and dismissal or attempts to remove from positions all those seem to work against his will regardless of their professional conduct in serving Malawians among many reasons. He further added that under Mutharika Malawi remains hopeless with no direction hence now its time for his regime to go.

Mtambo addressing the press in Mzuzu

On why Malawians should vote for Dr Chakwera , Mtambo said a vote for Chakwera will entail a shift to a progressive and prosperous nation where public service will be revamped under a reformative leadership of his partner Dr Chilima. He said the Tonse government will bring relief to farmers and the country’s economy in general by lowering the price of 50kg bag of fertilizer to K4, 495, thereby enabling abundant food production resulting to food security of families and the nation.

Mtambo also reminded people that economic landscape of the country which has deterioted under DPP regime will be lifted by enabling business youths and women get meaningful loans and utilize such resources in an enabling economic environment that will lead to prosperity.

Mtambo flanked by some CFT leaders Chimwemwe Nachela and CFT Diaspora leader Linda Khembo called upon MEC to ensure that there is undoubted free, fair and credible election. “All existing bottlenecks including the alleged data pollution must be addressed promptly and to the satisfaction of all stakeholders ahead of the polling day. MEC should ensure that political party monitors, or independent monitors, are not intimidated but given full latitude as permitted by the electoral laws and rules”.

Mtambo finished with a strong message for the Army and the Police that being security agents, they should remember the oath of protecting the citizens in executing duties ahead, during and after election so that Malawi remains a peaceful nation that all Malawians will be proud of.

Fattan Offset Printers has been at the centre of controversy . They have been printing parliamentary ballot papers locally, they printed for Mchinji, Lilongwe by elections using restrictive tendering.

The Defence and Security committee meeting Fattani Printers

The committee warned Fattani that since they have been printing ballot papaers before in elections, should there be any suspious ballot papers in the forthcoming presidential elections, the compamny will be held responsible

Ng’oma s the committee was greatful to the company directors for accommodating them on their fact finding mission, “although there were some elements of dishonesty from some of the employees when releasing information.”

The commitee said Inconsistent in responding to the committee’s question , has raised eyes brows that anything can happen and will be watching with an eagle eyes through out the elections and the committee can come back for further intensive investigations

Since Fattani was aware of the allegations that the country is aware on him likely being in the deal of printing fake ballots, his workers were made alert not to say anything regarding Printing big ballot papers before

The defense and security committee left Fattan premises not convinced that Fattan Printers are not involved in malpractices of Printing ballots privately to influence elections

“They form the security risk due to the fact that they have been Printing ballot papers for by elections before, a fact they were denying during probation and later on had to withdraw when pressure was mounting and apologised to the committee for laying that they hadly have printed ballot papers before and that let to the clue which tipped that Chris Offset also has printed ballot papers before and the committee is yet to visit Chris offset for questioning” argued Committee chair Dr ken ZIkhale Ngoma

UK based Political Scientist Mandindi tips Chakwera to win the presidency

By Chalo Mvula

A UK based Political scientist Allan  Mandindi has tipped Tonse Alliance torchbearer  Lazarus Chakwera to come out victorious at the presidential elections  due on June 23. He made the claims  after studying the current political trends  in Malawi  and also comparing how events of the similar fold turned out in the previous elections that have taken  place in Malawi.

Speaking to 247Malawi Media , Allan Mandindi described this year’s elections as unique  and that Malawi is experiencing  some new political trends that have never happened before.

“ Malawi is experiencing a new wave  that is unstoppable , everyone is  geared for change and there is a psychological acceptance from every quarter in society  that  something has to change”

Political Scientist Allan Mandindi – Chakwera and Chilima to win

Mandindi said the decision by the Constitutional court to nullify last year’s elections has given  an energy boost  to a lot of people to believe that against all the odds everything is possible “ We have DPP who have branded themselves as a system, meaning they claim that they have infiltrated in every sector of the government and have influence to get things go in their favour. The judiciary, however, proved that it will always remain independent and despite efforts by the DPP regime to bribe the judges they were not successful “ . With focus now on election monitoring Mandindi believe the probability of DPP rigging the election has been mitigated .

Mandindi believes the spotlight is on Malawi which will make it harder for DPP to rig despite admitting that the ruling regime will still attempt to rig. On the probability of Mutharika winning, Mandindi said  Politics can be unpredictable  but it doesn’t look likely that Mutharika can win

“Look elections can be unpredictable as they are many factors that need to be taken into account , things like voter apathy , null and voids  and of course rigging . We have seen big shocks in political history, President Harry Truman in USA  back in 1948 defied all prediction against his impending defeat to Thomas Dewey  and produced  an unexpected win  when all the odds were against him. Malawi election however is not just any other election, this election is about putting things right that didn’t go right in last year’s elections “

Mandindi , a Manchester Metropolitan  University Politics graduate and a holder of international relations masters says he has been studying Malawian politics for a long time  and feels Tonse alliance is a victory for all Malawians .  Malawi has been so divided, increasing levels of nepotism has left the gap between regional and tribal divides widening and Tonse alliance represents the unity that Malawi needs “ . He described Saulos Chilima as an accomplished orator and great salesman who has pushed the Tonse brand even higher.

Tonse alliance

On comparing the two alliances Mandindi said the DPP and UDF alliance is good on paper but come across with a lot of garbage from the recent past . He also noted that the fact that the alliance seems to dwell on two families of Muluzi and Mutharika has put them at a disadvantage as Malawians are not keen at handing power just to a few families. He also noted that the unfinished corruption case of Bakili Muluzi has made the alliance fail to get a campaign boost from Bakili who is a well known great campaigner. Mandindi also criticized DPP  campaign strategy describing it as a disaster “DPP has lived in denial, and focused on using dubious means for elections not to take place , with that they never focused on campaign strategy  and have only waken up while its too late.I ts backfiring now as even Mutharika can’t keep up and all they have done is let Atupele campaign on his own”

Mandindi concluded that all the political factors seem to favour a Tonse alliance win and he can confidently say Malawi will have a new president in Dr Lazarus Chakwera. “There is time for everything and unfortunately DPP time to be in power has come to the end “ concluded Mandindi
