Malawi Broadcasting Corporation ( MBC) Journalist Allan Phetembe has died and other three sustained serious injuries in a car road accident that happened in Neno district on Friday 1 October,2021.
Confirming the incident to the Press, Malawi Broadcasting Corporation ( MBC) Director General George Kasakula said the group of Journalists were on their way to Neno South Constituency to cover an event by Mark Katsonga. ” They were going in Neno South Constituency to cover an event by the Constituency’s Member of Parliament Honourable Mark Katsonga.
Around lunch hour, we heard that the car that Hon. Katsonga gave them was involved in a road accident and that he was seriously injured. About an hour or so later, we heard that our reporter ( Phetembe) has died” he confirmed.
Kasakula said he is suddened by the sudden death of Phetembe. Apart from Phetembe, the car had another Journalist from MBC, one Journalist from Radio Maria and two Journalists from Times Media Group.
The First Lady Madam Monica Chakwera will this coming Saturday be the guest of honour at the launch of the diaspora women group called Malawian Women in Diaspora Network . The Launch, which will be done virtually using Zoom Platform will bring together women of Malawi Origin currently living in the diaspora who have come together to push for various causes that help Malawi.
According to the group, the formation of the network is coming at the back of another event that the First Lady had with diaspora women early in the year. The group , which prefers to be regarded as a “sisterhood” has set its vision to connect Malawian women and girls in order to build networks and partnerships that will allow collective efforts and ingenuity to be more meaningful and fruitful in various communities of residence, but particularly in Malawi.The group will aim to create connections through the use of a web based database
The launch event has been entitled “Sisterhood for Change”, and will take place online this Saturday, 2 October 2021 from 2.00p.m – 5.00p.m Malawi time. A List of Speakers on the day include Joyce Obaseki, Dr Fulata Moyo, Dr Dalitso Sulamoyo , Dr Grace Kumchulesi, Ruth Mbera, Bhatupe Mhango Chipanta, Tina Sayenda and Mavis Kanjadza. The main activities will include a demonstration of the website functions, presentations of two “focus projects” that will demonstrate how the network will be involved, and presentation. Canga Kamwambe and Fatima Nkata are set to be the event moderators.
Among the core objectives of the sisterhood, the women will Champion and support various charities and individuals in the Diaspora involved in various activities in Malawi by contributing to awareness, information, communication and visibility drives, fundraising campaigns and other events. They will Champion awareness campaigns for the women in the Diaspora on the business and investment opportunities available in Malawi and their associated processes. In addition, contribute to capacity building and the pursuance of various projects by Malawian women in the Diaspora. They will Champion initiatives, remunerated or on a voluntary basis, that women in the Diaspora can participate in for Malawi. Such activities will prioritize knowledge and skill transfer, health and education, issues of law, human rights and gender equality, politics and governance; achieved using virtual resources, short-term employment in Malawi or work during vacations.
The Group will also be a resource for research that will contribute towards innovation and solutions to suit unique Malawian problems. And lastly, the network will aim to Promote patriotism, sisterhood and collaboration amongst Malawian women and girls living in the Diaspora. In addition, they will create Malawian role models and mentors for young women in all sectors.
Malawi President Chakwera has warned the newly appointed heads of Malawi mission abroad to not get involved in scandals like some of their predecessors but to go out there and represent the country with diligence, dignity and integrity.
Chakwera made the caution on Wednesday at Kamuzu Palace where he hosted eighteen ambassadors who have been appointed to head missions in different foreign countries.
“There are a lot of scandals out there and sometimes these are associated with foreign missions. Do not misstep the law. Be law abiding and always endeavour to be diplomatic. One of the tenets of the Chakwera Super high is the rule of law.
“You are the best representatives of these ideals and do not be the first ones to break the law,” Chakwera warned.
The Malawi leader went ahead to advise the diplomats to treat people with respect and to not abuse their privilege as they serve from outside the country.

The President said, despite Malawi’s challenges, the country is still the warm heart of Africa and as such, the diplomats must strive to work hard in their various missions to bring investors in the country.
“We want a country that is industrialized, a country that has created inclusive wealth, a country
that is self-reliant and It will take not just those labouring within Malawi, but also all those labouring outside the country, representing the tenets of such a vision,” said Chakwera, adding that this was not diplomacy as usual, but rather, economic diplomacy.
“Look for grants in education, finances for infrastructural development, climate change mediation, technological support to strengthen governance institutions in the country. Do your best for positive international publicity,” said Chakwera.
Speaking before President Chakwera, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Eisenhower Mkaka, thanked the Malawi leader for choosing the best minds to represent the country outside.
The Minister said, before foreign missions acted like a dumping ground for non-conforming politicians.
A place where they sent those who were not wanted on the political scene, to silence them.
Naomi Ngwira, who spoke on behalf of the appointees, thanked Chakwera for being gender sensitive in the appointments.
“There are as many women as there are men on this group. We are ready to take on the mission and serve the president and the people of Malawi with diligence and integrity and we promise to ably represent the country to the best of our ability,” said Ngwira.
The youthful renown gospel musician, Donnex Muva Daniel has emerged the victor in a tightly contested Malawi Congress Party primary elections for Mzimba East Constituency.
Unofficial results in our possession shows that Muva who is a son to Reverend Steven Muva of the Malawi Assemblies of God and a Gospel musician got 167 votes in a rerun to claim victory over the only female contestant in the race Dr. Mary Shawa who got 107 votes.
In the first round of the elections, Muva got 85 votes to go level with Shawa while the runner up was Reuben Ngwenya with 84 votes, with the rest shared between Harold Jonasi Oven Myaba and Stonard Chisamba Salamba.
The election in Mzimba East is coming following the death of its legislator Wezzie Gondwe and is among constituencies and a ward in which Malawi Electoral Commission is scheduled to conduct by-elections on 26th October this year.
Yunus Sherrif and Peter Wadabwa scored a goal each for Mighty Wanderers to beat Ekwendeni Hammers 2-0 at Kamuzu Stadium on Thursday to narrow the gap between themselves and league leaders, Nyasa Big Bullets.
The Nigerian scored first midway in the first half before substitute Peter Wadabwa came with a powerful header to finish off the northern region side in the 80th minute.
