South Africa’s top cop faces suspension calls amidst corruption scandal

By Burnett Munthali

The Independent Police Union of South Africa is calling for the precautionary suspension of National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola, citing concerns over his suitability to lead the country’s police force.

The union’s demand comes amidst allegations of corruption and irregularities in a R360-million health tender.

Masemola is facing charges related to violating the Public Finance Management Act, specifically in connection with a controversial health tender linked to alleged criminal kingpin Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala.

The police commissioner’s situation has sparked widespread concern, with the Democratic Alliance (DA) formally requesting President Cyril Ramaphosa to place Masemola on precautionary suspension.

Fannie Masemola

The DA argues that Masemola’s continued leadership poses a risk to the integrity of the police service, emphasizing that the fight against crime cannot succeed without clean and accountable leadership.

The party is pushing for the immediate appointment of an Acting National Commissioner, citing precedent set by previous presidents who have utilized Section 9 of the SAPS Act to address similar leadership crises.

The calls for Masemola’s suspension come at a sensitive time for South African law enforcement, with the country grappling with high rates of violent crime and fragile public confidence in the police service.

The outcome of this situation remains uncertain, with President Ramaphosa yet to announce his decision.

Amaryllis Hotel Scandal: Malawi’s Public Accounts Committee reopens inquiry

By Burnett Munthali

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Malawi’s Parliament has reopened its inquiry into the purchase of Amaryllis Hotel by the Public Service Pension Trust Fund, with former Registrar of Financial Institutions MacDonald Mafuta Mwale appearing before the committee today.

The committee is investigating the K128 billion deal, amid allegations of corruption and overpricing.

The committee has also summoned Yusuf Investment Limited, owners of the hotel, former Secretary to the President and Cabinet Colleen Zamba, Chief Secretary Justin Saidi, and National Bank of Malawi.

PAC Chairperson Steven Baba Malondera stated that Yusuf Investment Limited had requested a private hearing, but the committee rejected the request, insisting on transparency.

Yusuf Investment Limited had been scheduled to appear before the committee on April 23, but requested a postponement, citing the owner’s illness and treatment in South Africa.

The committee has rescheduled the appearance to April 29, emphasizing that proceedings will not be unduly delayed.

If Shiraz Yusuf remains unable to attend, board members of Yusuf Investment Limited, including Yusuf Shiraz Yusuf, will be required to appear before the committee.

Meanwhile, the committee has not received any communication from Colleen Zamba, who is expected to appear on April 28, and will proceed with the hearing as scheduled.

The Amaryllis Hotel deal has sparked widespread outrage, with allegations of inflated pricing and corruption.

The hotel was sold to the Public Service Pension Trust Fund for K128 billion, despite independent valuations estimating its value at around K48 billion.

MCP challenges DPP’s explanation for fuel crisis

By Chisomo Phiri

The main opposition Malawi Congress Party(MCP) has expressed surprise that the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is attributing the country’s fuel shortages to the war in Iran and a shortage of foreign exchange.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lilongwe on Wednesday, the party’s Director of Campaign Moses Kunkuyu said the DPP-led government should come out in the open and clearly explain the true state of foreign exchange in the country.

He added that it is surprising that the DPP is making such claims now, when it previously dismissed similar explanations given by the MCP during its time in government.

Kunkuyu also accused the government of misusing foreign exchange by importing maize from Zambia instead of purchasing it locally.

He emphasized that leaders have a responsibility to provide accurate and honest information to Malawians.

Kunkuyu said using a government-to-government (G2G) arrangement is the only effective way of procuring fuel, rather than relying on private intermediaries, which he described as “dubious operators.”

He said it is surprising that the government claims the economy is performing well while prices of goods continue to rise and Malawians are struggling with the cost of living.

Kunkuyu further noted that, under current conditions, a farmer needs to sell about 13 bags of maize in order to afford just one bag of fertilizer.

He also accused the government of disadvantaging certain groups, particularly farmers, through its economic policies.

On tobacco marketing, Kunkuyu said last year’s tobacco prices started at around $3 per kilogram, compared to about $2.50 currently.

He urged the government to prioritize farmers, saying they are a key source of the country’s foreign exchange earnings.

Kunkuyu also criticized the government for purchasing maize from Zambia, thereby spending foreign exchange, when it could have sourced the commodity locally.

According to Kunkuyu, the government’s use of informal or questionable channels in procuring fuel will only worsen the shortage situation in the country.

On Monday this week, the local press quoted government spokesperson Shadreck Namalomba to have admitted that the country does not have forex that can help to procure fuel.

Malawi is ruled by people with papers, not intelligence,” says revolutionary leader Jumah

By Vincent Gunde

Revolutionary leader of Muvi wa Chilungamo Revolutionary Party (MRP) Bantu Saunders Jumah, has claimed that Malawi is not led by intelligent people but men and women of papers saying the day the country will be ruled by intelligent people,. Malawi will be a paradise.

Jumah said education does not remove the stupidity of a person but wiping out ignorance of a person saying if there was any leader whose leadership touched everyone in Malawi is Bakili Muluzi saying he has passion for the country and its citizens.

The Revolutionary leader said Malawi has one woman who is internationally known for her passion – Dr. Joyce Banda saying no one speaks bad of her.

Speaking through his Mindset Change project from a Revolutionary voice, Jumah has claimed that education is not intelligent, and intelligent is not a person observing that the mistake most Malawians made was to think that education can run an institution or a country.

Jumah

Jumah said frustrations without action is slavery that will not end observing that Malawi is a nation that was frustrated from 1964 saying in 2004 the vigilant Malawians rejected Dr. Bakili Muluzi’s bid for third term.
.
He said in 2014 – 2019 a bell went ringing that whoever President makes a mistake taking the citizens for granted, will serve for only one term in office saying the elections of September, 2025 had taught President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera that he was a one term presidency.

Jumah said frustrations without action denies the people truth and justice saying Malawi is the richest country in southern Africa, Lake Malawi alone has over 700 species of fish and gas.

He said interestingly, China is the largest exporter of Tilapia ( chambo), they took it from Lake Malawi to their own lakes while Malawi is still rotating at a roundabout without direction.

The Revolutionary leader has urged Malawians to stop being spectators of their own struggle, they have to do something by not becoming participants of change for their nation.

” Let’s talk about the Revolution, don’t wait for change, change will not come, we are the change,” said Jumah.

He said Malawi need a Revolution to change to the better urging Malawians to rise up challenging them that if they can give him the country in 2030 the whole nation will ask where was this man?

Jumah has challenged Malawians that what makes a person to be a good person is not educational qualifications but passion observing that in this country there are radio, cell phone, TV, motorcycle repairs and mechanics, they haven’t gone to school to learn all of these, what is in their hearts is passion.

He said in this country people believe that one who has a degree is intelligent saying intelligent is not education, it is just a gift observing that Malawi ever since 1964 has been ruled by Doctors and Professors but none of them received the Moi Ibrahim Award because they don’t have passion for their country and its citizens.
