Chakwera said this during his weekly special program on the state run Malawi Broadcasting Corporation called Malawi Watsopano.

Chakwera said the state is not after names in the fight against corruption and plunder of public resources.

“We are not after names; we will pounce on anyone who is in conflict with the law.  We will not look at the status of a person in the society, we will not look at the position or how powerful one is, there is no untouchable in this fight,” he said.

He said his job of what he described as clearing the rubble needs patience but bravery to achieve its goal, saying the fight against corruption cannot be win within a very short period of time.

The President said he will not allow people in the country to enrich themselves dubiously, warning that all the culprits will not be left scot-free.

Civic Education Minister Mtambo calls for more stakeholder involvement in Covid19 fight

By Chalo Mvula

The Minister of Civic education and National unity Timothy Mtambo has called on various stakeholders to have a more coordinated effort in highlighting the plight of covid19 to Malawians. He was speaking this on an online platform PowerGlobal Radio after being hosted by Mahara Mhango in a show called “The great conversation”

Mtambo said it is his ministry duty to make Malawians aware that Covid19 is real and that it is killing people. He said there had been conflicting reports in the past with others claiming this is hoax or only an illness that attacks the rich and high-profile people. The stats for the pandemic which currently stands at 97 people dead, 1878 active cases and 3557 confirmed cases sees more people getting infected every day. According to the Minister this  highlights that everyone, disregarding the social standing is at risk “Let me tell Malawians that Covid is a threat ,Covid is real  and lets protect ourselves and others. The government under Dr Lazarus Chakwera is working hard to save lives of Malawians”.

Minister of Civic Education and National Unity Hon Timothy Mtambo

Asked on what approaches his ministry will adopt to make sure that word about the dangers of the virus reaches every Malawian including those in very rural areas, Mtambo said the ministry is currently developing a strategy plan. He said it is worrying that there are elements of stigma around the pandemic “We need to be open about Covid19, there is no point to hide or treat people that have the virus as some sort of outcasts. Malawi has to face the virus head on and work together to minimising its spread” He suggested an idea where by his ministry want to embark on an outreach programme that uses those that have recovered from the illness to talk of their experiences as one way of breaking the stigma surrounding Covid19.

Mtambo also talked about the need to learn from what other countries that have had the same experiences have done. “We have to use all diverse means that are available– lets learn from what other countries that have had this experience”. He highlighted that government is open and is willing to implement any new measure that will help save the life of Malawians. He called on various stakeholders to help the government if they can as the country is in need of masks and test kits

The minister also talked about Possibility of using Teachers that are not in school to be community educators on issues around Covid “I  recently had a meeting with university students and had a discussion  on how can we use them to go on ground to disseminate information  so that every Malawians is well informed about the pandemic”. He highlighted that his Ministry will work on engaging volunteers who have help in civic education initiatives.

Mtambo urged Malawians not to travel unless it is necessary to do so, to minimise visiting friends and family and  wash their hands regularly and wear masks  when in public places. The Minister had supportive words to health care workers who are at the frontline fighting the pandemic “On behalf of the president let me thank our healthcare workers who are putting their lives on the line to help save Malawians, let me assure you that Government will give you sufficient support and  enough personal protective equipment to make sure you are protected”

The show also had other guests that included Daud Suleman, American based Nurse Doreen Chisiza and Dr  Daniel Dube , a USA based pulmonologist.

Minister of Education, Hon. Agnes NyaLonje, says her Ministry is giving a serious thought to re-opening of some institutions of higher learning on case by case basis.

NyaLonje says with Covid-19 cases increasing daily, the necessary skillset required to fight the pandemic may at some point fall short and not be enough if drastic positive decisions are not made by the Ministry she heads.

She gave an example of nurses, doctors, technology experts, laboratory technicians, research scientists and researchers as among other skills that are crucial if Malawi is to manage and win the fight against the pandemic.

“We must challenge ourselves to take bold decisions. All high skilled frontline labour is affected by the pandemic and we might run short of those skills soon,” said NyaLonje.

She gave an example of Daeyang Luke University which was only two weeks away from graduating a fresh cohort of nurses and other medical staff and also College of Medicine that was only eight weeks away from graduating doctors and other specialists when schools were closed in March.

“If such and other colleges can demonstrate that they are able to follow the minimum guidelines to protect both students and lecturers, then we will allow them to re-open and serve as well as save the nation,” said the minister adding, “We need to change our mindset of applying one solution fits all.”

NyaLonje further opined that: “in the wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the world, Malawi inclusive, is seeking for Public Health experts, and as a sector, we must be ready to provide them.:

She emphasized that her approach is focused on systematic solution provision by Government.

NyaLonje said as the Tonse Government continues on its path to transform Malawi from the pangs of poverty and doldrums of economic stagnation, the country will need all the expertise it can get from both the public and private Universities.

She said in that regard, the case by case review will not only be limited to the health and medical fields but across the board as all skills are required bearing in mind that the world has not stopped.

The new Minister of Education said would take the issue and engage her counterparts in the Presidential Taskforce so that a quick decision can be made.

NyaLonje made the points above when she together with Deputy Minister Minister Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima met members of the Association of Private Universities of Malawi Friday in Blantyre.

The bank claims that its contribution to fight the pandemic is all about protecting lives, economies, jobs and aspirations. This is why they started deploying a comprehensive response plan to the pandemic just weeks after the country recorded first infections. They have also decongested their premises by allowing employees to work remotely either from home or other designated places. There has also been intensified hygiene practices in all service centres by cleaning all surfaces frequently, placement of hand sanitizers at all strategic spots, leaving most doors open to allow customers and staff move freely without touching surfaces.

On the business front the bank has removed a range of transactional fees on most of our digital products to allow and encourage Malawians use digital banking as one way of avoiding crowded places. Having done all that, the bank still thought it fitting to help frontline personnel as they undertake their task of treating managing people and treating Covid-19 patients.

As part of contribution towards the fight against the pandemic, Standard Bank has   donated assorted items to health facility across the country through the Ministry of Health to help in managing and treating Covid-19 patients.
