All set for MCP Diaspora election of new office bearers

The Diaspora Chapter of the ruling Malawi Congress Party will be electing its new office bearers. The new bearers will replace the current executive whose term of office finishes at the end of this month after being in office for 5 years

Making the statement available to 247Malawi News, the outgoing Spokesperson of the group Chalo Mvula confirmed that indeed elections are due to take place  and that New leadership will be unveiled at the beginning of August “ We are a democratic institution just like our party in Malawi, as such leaders  need to get fresh mandate every five years to lead the organisation”

Malawi Congress Party Diaspora Network (MCPDN) structure sees it having members all over the world. It is the Umbrella body that currently comprises of MCP wings from RSA, USA, UK , Canada and  Republic of Ireland.

Malawi Congress Party Diaspora has been one of the success stories of external wings of Malawi political parties . With USA based Lucy Chitembeya and UK based  Allan as the first leaders since its inceptions, the group is currently headed by UK based Patricia Kulipa Chimangeni    who is deputised by USA based Paulos Banda.

The Diaspora MCP has made great contribution towards ushering in of Dr Lazarus Chakwera as the new President of Malawi after it recently donated K9 million kwacha towards election monitoring. This follows another K6 million that was donated for the same initiative back in 2019. On top of the financial contributions, the group has also been strategically active on social media promoting the MCP party.  One member of the group, Music artist Nic Thindwa  released a number of singles prior to election in support of the party with the latest one being “Tipambana” done alongside Rudo Chakwera.

On the upcoming elections, Chalo Mvula said candidates will be those that are affiliated to the group “ As an umbrella group on various regional wings , ours leaders will continue to be based in different countries  “added Mvula.

Foreign Minister Mkaka to feature on London Political virtual pre summit event

The Newly appointed Malawi  foreign affairs Minister Hon Eisenhower Mkaka and Deputy minister for health Hon Chrissie Kalamula will be among the top speakers at a virtual pre-summit event that has been organised by the London Political Summit group.

The virtual event which is scheduled to take place on Monday 21st July , will see Hon Mkaka and Hon Kalamula share the platform  with the  Minister for Women Affairs and Social Development  in Nigeria, Hon Dr Pauline Tallen; British Conservative Party  Member of Parliament (MP) for Peterborough  Paul Bristow , and  Steve Azzaki, member of House of Reps in Nigeria.  The meeting will use Zoom conferencing platform and is scheduled to start at 2pm GMT

London Political Summit is a growing think-tank platform set to engage with Political and economic leaders. It also engages with emerging leaders of the future on the trends of governance and democratic paradigm shifts.

The theme of the Monday event will be “Politics of Covid, Post-Covid and the SDG Positives”. The actual summit, which is a yearly event is planned for October. The pre-summit event sets the tone of what is to come at the summit in October which among other things Awards are given out to politicians who have made a difference in various countries. Renowned TV host Dr Pauline Long will  be the host the pre summit event  alongside Dr Josephine Odiambo

The impact of the Covid19 pandemic has made the organisers centre around the issue as the main theme for this year’s gathering. “The theme this year is centred on, “Politics of Covid, Post-Covid and the SDG Positives”. Considering the various Covid-19 political challenges and its resultant socio-economic uncertainty both across Europe and Africa. It is now important to re-examine the role of politics in national security, human security and social development. The summit would look at the emerging trends of health and social inequalities among women, children and the gender divide in modern society” reads the statement from the group.

On why Hon Mkaka  has been chosen to be one of the main speakers , the summit executive member  Allan Mandindi  said  the organisers felt Mkaka is a perfect fit  as he has just taken up a challenging role  of building international relations for Malawi “We are sure that Hon Mkaka is coming in his new role with fresh ideas, and by engaging with these leaders from the other countries , it will be beneficial as far as knowledge exchange is concerned”   With the issue centred on Covid19 Mandindi said Hon Chrissie Kalamula, as  deputy health minister will have opportunity of sharing to the world the current state of the pandemic in Malawi and what Malawi is doing to slow down the rise of the pandemic. There will also be opportunity to hear what other countries who have been hot hard by the virus such as UK are doing to contain the spread.

Participants for the event will include political leaders and top government officials from around the world, community leaders, civil societies and academics. The event is also open to members of the public interested in understanding  the ideas that form a political will, public will power, separation of powers, nationalism and patriotism  in modern societies .

UK to inject 40 Million Euros to boost trade with Malawi

UK is to implement a 40 million euros trade project in Malawi through the Trade Mark East Africa with the aim of improving trade infrastructure, enhancing the trade environment, and boosting business competitiveness.

This was disclosed by the Acting UK High Commissioner to Malawi, Dave Beer when he paid a courtesy call on the new Minister of Trade, Sosten Gwengwe.

During the meeting, the two exchanged views on strengthening cooperation in the areas of Trade and Private Sector Development.

Gwengwe also took time to commend the UK for its continued support to Malawi and reiterated government’s readiness and commitment to promote Trade Development and Export growth in order to improve Malawi’s trade balance and the economic livelihoods of the citizens.

Phalombe Man takes own life over denial to marry second wife

A 45-year-old Phalombe man identified as Wyson Sabola has killed himself after his wife refused him marrying a second wife.

According to Police, Wyson was found dead in the bush on Wednesday after he had gone missing for 24 hours.

“Sabola had been pushing his wife to allow him take a second wife but his wife never came to terms with his suggestion, a thing that angered him, hence the decision to commit suicide by drinking pesticides,” said Innocent Moses, Public Relations Officer for Phalombe Police Station.

His body was taken to Migowi Health Center where a postmortem was conducted and results showed that the deceased’s death was due to poison and the pesticides were discovered in his pocket.

Meanwhile police in Phalombe appeal to the general public to follow proper channels of resolving their grievances other than taking their own lives.

Kazako visits MBC as he pledge new ways of doing things

The Minister of Information, Gospel Kazako on Wednesday toured Malawi Broadcasting Corporation-MBC with pledge to reconstruct and bring a new way of doing things at the Corporation. He toured MBC studios at the Television Centre.


The minister said the Tonse Alliance government will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that there is a new wave of operations at MBC that will serve all Malawians regardless of their political affiliation or tribe.
Kazako said it was pathetic to note that MBC has been operating as a political tool and favoring a few individuals that were aligned to the previous ruling party.
“Malawi Broadcasting Corporation MBC was establish to serve the nation in Informing, Educating and entertaining the nation. Unfortunately, the public broadcaster turned away from its core responsibility and became a political tool where a ruling party would dictate the affairs of the corporation,” said Kazako.

Kazako said a new wave has come and MBC ought to stop operating under a political colour and instead, the corporation should restore its lost glory by being Professional in its operations. Kazako noted with concern that during the DPP administration, only those that were politically connected to the former government were considered and given opportunities despite some of them lacking qualifications and skills. He then described MBC as a bad boy that need to change its ways.

The minister then stressed that government will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that people are employed on merit and not on political grounds. While giving a word of hope to the staff, Kazako emphasized that during the reconstruction and sanitization of MBC, some employees will fall casualties.


Kazako further put it straight that the Tonse alliance will ensure transparency and accountability by operationalizing the Access to Information law.
On his part, MBC Director General Aubrey Sumbuleta admitted that the corporation has not done a good job in some respects and pledged never to repeat the past mistakes. The minister is expected to inspect a number of companies and institutions that report to his ministry as part of his familialization tour.
