UK honours Malawi : Abida Mia invited to Buckingham Palace

King Charles III has invited Minister of Water and Sanitation Abida Mia to a Ministerial Water Forum scheduled for next week in Buckingham Palace.

The invitation was announced by Water Witness International CEO Nick Hepworth during an international leardership forum in Lilongwe organised by the Ministry of Water and Sanitation co-hosted with the UK Government under the Just Transitions for Water Security programme.

This comes at a time when Malawi is making strides in the water sector with policy reforms and the coming up of the National Water Resources Authority.

Mia while attending the forum, is expected to share the country’s success in the water sector as she reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring universal access to clean water in meeting the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on water and sanitation.

“We don’t have time for just rhetoric. What we need now is action. Millions of Malawians are looking forward to having access to safe, clean water and we have more than five years to cross the finish line. Therefore, we must do more that triple our efforts,” Mia stated.

Mia has since attributed the invitation to the achievements from President Chakwera’s visionary leadership, highlighting the strong political will at the highest level to push the water agenda forward.

Chilwa Minerals Limited  to start mining this year.

Malawian minerals continue to attract investors, as Chilwa Minerals Limited, an Australian exploration minerals company has expressed its interest in rolling out its mineral exploration project in the country.

This has come out during a meeting which the founder and Managing Director for the company Cadell Buss hailed in Mzuzu with the Minister of mining Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma.

According to Buss, the company is centered around Chilwa Basin.

Buss also revealed that his company has a laboratory where some tests of the minirals will be happening.

He  said: ” the discussions with the government of Malawi, through the ministry of mining are at an advanced stage, adding that there are prospects that the exploration of the minirals can start by August this year”.

On his part, Mining minister Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma expressed optimism that the country will benefit alot with the coming of Chilwa Mineral Limited.

“Chirwa Mineral Limited has an established mineral lab in Zalewa which will help to reduce cost as for a long time the country has been doing its mineral test and analysis outside the country,” He said.

Chilwa Minerals Limited is advancing the Chilwa project in the southern Malawi , focusing on heavy minerals sand and rare earth elements and it is covering over 800 square kilometers.

Farmers World donates food items to Lilongwe Social Rehabilitation Center

Farmers World, a leading agricultural company in Malawi, has donated assorted items to the Lilongwe Social Rehabilitation Centre, a facility that cares for vulnerable children.

The donation, which included sugar, rice, fruity juice, and salt, among others, is part of the company’s efforts to support the welfare of children in Malawi.

According to , Marketing Manager for Farmers World,Vitumbiko Ntonga, the donation is a testament to the company’s commitment to social responsibility.

“We’re committed to support vulnerable children in Malawi. We believe that every child deserves a chance to grow and develop, and we’re happy to be part of that journey.”

The Lilongwe Social Rehabilitation Centre provides a safe haven for children who have been orphaned, abandoned, or abused. The centre offers a range of services, including food, shelter, education, and counseling. However, the centre faces numerous challenges, including food shortages and limited resources.

Centre Manager for Lilongwe Social Rehabilitation  under the Ministry of Gender Community Development and Social Welfare Peter Magomero Centre, expressed gratitude for the donation. “We’re thankful to Farmers World for their generosity. The items they’ve donated will go a long way in supporting the children under our care.”

Vitumbiko emphasized that the donation is not a one-off event, but rather part of the company’s ongoing efforts to support vulnerable communities in Malawi.

“We believe in giving back to the community. We’re committed to supporting initiatives that promote the welfare of children and vulnerable communities.”

The donation was received with excitement by the children at the centre. Many of them were seen smiling and laughing as they received the assorted items. The centre’s staff were also grateful for the donation, which they said would help alleviate some of the challenges they face.

Nkhotakota Education College Visits Parliament Amid Budget Session

Nkhotakota Education College, along with a private secondary school, visited Parliament during the 2025-2026 budget session in Lilongwe. The visit was sponsored by the schools’ managing directors, who are also Malawi Congress Party (MCP) legislators for Nkhotakota-Chia and Nkhotakota Central constituencies, Brainax Kaisi and Peter Mazizi.

In his remarks, Kaisi emphasized the importance of learning beyond the classroom. He stated that the students’ visit to Parliament would help them understand how legislators deliberate and make decisions. “In the future, when these students have political interests, they can build on this experience,” he added.

School headmaster Kaombe Chiwaula Mbali also highlighted the significance of the tour. He explained that their curriculum focuses on governance and democracy, and the visit provided students with the opportunity to learn first-hand. “It is important for students to experience governance in action, beyond the classroom,” Mbali said.

He noted that the visit was an eye-opener for the students, who were able to see how parliamentary duties are carried out. Mbali also stressed the importance of teaching students about the three branches of government, with the visit offering them a closer look at Parliament as one of these branches.

The visit provided valuable educational exposure, giving students insight into the workings of the national legislature.

Media Council of Malawi Ledges to protect  journalists during elections

The Media Council of Malawi (MCM) is taking a strong stance on promoting freedom of expression and ensuring the safety of journalists during elections.

With support from the Malawi National Commission for UNESCO, MCM is emphasizing the crucial role journalists play in holding those in power accountable and informing the public to make informed choices.

MCM Executive Director Moses Kaufa is urging law enforcement agencies and political parties to protect media freedom, recognizing the importance of a well-informed media in the electoral process.

This sentiment is echoed by European Union Ambassador to Malawi, Rune Skinnebach, who stresses that a well-informed media is vital for elections.

In addition to promoting media freedom, MCM is also advocating for the safety and security of journalists during elections.

UNESCO Deputy Acting Executive Secretary David Mulera has pledged his organization’s support for this initiative.

Key stakeholders, including the MCM, UNESCO, European Union, and Malawi Police Service, have committed to ensuring media safety and freedom.
