Analysis: Malawi and Zambia Football Legends showcase resilience in goalless draw

0

By Burnett Munthali

The much-anticipated clash between Malawi and Zambia football legends at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe ended in a goalless stalemate. Despite the excitement generated by the reunion of iconic players and the palpable nostalgia in the stands, neither team could find the back of the net in what turned out to be a tightly contested and rain-soaked match.

Both teams adopted a short-passing game, demonstrating their commitment to skillful play and maintaining possession. However, the lack of urgency in the final third was evident. The approach seemed more focused on entertaining the fans and reliving the camaraderie of their playing days rather than intense competition.

Malawi fielded a mix of experienced defenders like Peter Mponda and Elvis Kafoteka, alongside creative midfielders such as Joseph Kamwendo and Ernest Mtawali.

Legends in action

Chiukepo Msowoya led the line but lacked adequate support, with the team struggling to convert possession into meaningful chances.

Zambia relied on the likes of Clifford Mulenga and James Chamanga to lead their attack, with veteran goalkeeper Kaliliro Kakonje providing stability at the back.

The Zambians also prioritized ball retention but missed opportunities to exploit gaps in Malawi’s defense.

Jimmy Zakazaka replaced Peter Mponda in the 28th minute, signaling a shift toward a more offensive strategy.

Double substitutions before halftime saw Cedric Nankhumwa and Gilbert Chirwa come in, but the attacking intent still failed to translate into goals.

Zambia’s James Chamanga launched a powerful shot early on, but it sailed over the bar.

Malawi’s Robert Ng’ambi missed a golden opportunity in the second half, with his glancing header going wide.

Zambia’s Kaliliro Kakonje made a crucial save early in the second half, denying Malawi a potential opener during their strongest spell of the game.

The heavy rain added an extra layer of difficulty, impacting ball control and movement. Both teams displayed resilience in enduring the challenging conditions, but the adverse weather further limited the fluidity of the game.

The goalless draw might have disappointed some fans expecting goals, but the match successfully celebrated the legacy of these football legends. The event highlighted the enduring passion for football in both countries, drawing applause for the camaraderie displayed on the field.

While the match ended without goals, it was a fitting tribute to the rich football history shared by Malawi and Zambia. The legends proved they still possess the skills and spirit that endeared them to fans during their professional careers. The game emphasized the importance of such events in uniting fans and celebrating the legacy of African football.

Moving forward, similar matches could benefit from more structured play and better weather preparation to maximize entertainment value.

Alot has been said , some have gone further to launch minute by minute attack on the Malawi Congress Party leadership through creation of negative narratives.

But wait a minute, MCP remains powerful force because so far all the paid up propaganda cannot withstand pace of development which the country is going through.

While some people are busy creating propaganda MCP is busy with  development

On MCP relationship with the Catholic Bishops, MCP continues to enjoys cordial relationship with Catholic Church and its Bishops. President Chakwera leadership has met Catholic Bishops several times discussing issues of national developments. This narrative being peddled here is wrong.

Chakwera has engaged different groups including vendors from all markets.

On development agenda , MCP is busy with development agenda of this country and all is happening in order to stop MCP from carrying out its developmental agenda.

MCP is a party built on strong foundation and will never shake easily.

Armed men attack sisters’ convent in Blantyre, leaving security guard critically injured

By Burnett Munthali

A group of armed men suspected to be thugs  attacked the Maria Goretti Convent for the Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary (SBVM) near Limbe Cathedral in Blantyre on Saturday. The attack left a security guard critically injured, and the nuns residing at the convent traumatized and in fear.

The severely injured guard is currently receiving treatment at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, while the convent remains in a state of shock following the incident. Church officials at Limbe Cathedral and police at Limbe Police Station have confirmed the attack, which occurred around 2 a.m.

Reports indicate that over 20 men armed with pangas, machetes, stones, and clubs breached the perimeter fence of the compound that houses the convent and Maria Goretti Girls Primary School. The attackers engaged in a violent confrontation with security guards on duty as they attempted to break into the building where the sisters are housed. Despite their efforts, the guards managed to prevent the thugs from accessing the convent, though one guard sustained life-threatening injuries during the confrontation.

The convent is located just a short distance from the Limbe Cathedral, where Archbishop Thomas Luke Msusa delivered a controversial sermon on Christmas Eve. In the sermon, the Archbishop criticized the Chikangawa Commission of Inquiry report, drawing backlash from government sympathizers and supporters of the ruling MCP. Some individuals have allegedly issued threats against the Archbishop, raising suspicions about the motive behind the attack on the convent.

While the connection between the Archbishop’s remarks and the attack has not been established, the incident has raised concerns about the safety of religious leaders and institutions in Malawi. Archbishop Msusa does not reside at the priests’ house adjacent to the church but visits the parish occasionally.

This violent act has left priests and nuns at the headquarters of the Blantyre Archdiocese living in fear and uncertainty. The Catholic community has called for swift investigations and measures to ensure the safety and protection of religious figures and institutions.

The police are yet to confirm whether the attackers were affiliated with the ruling party, but the allegations have fueled tensions and debates about political violence in Malawi. Authorities have pledged to investigate the matter thoroughly and bring the perpetrators to justice.

This incident underscores the urgent need for Malawi to address growing concerns over insecurity and political violence, which continue to pose threats to the country’s peace and stability.
