His Excellency President Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika and First Lady Prof. Gertrude Mutharika left Malawi on Friday for a short private trip to South Africa, State House has confirmed.
The President and First Lady departed from Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe. Before boarding, President Mutharika addressed members of staff, saying the visit was personal and would last only a few days.

“I’m heading to South Africa for a short trip and will be back in a few days. I hope you’ll all miss me. Everything is under control here. I wish you all the best,” he said.
Witnesses at the airport described the President as being in high spirits. He took time to interact warmly with airport and State House staff before his departure.
President Mutharika assured Malawians that government operations would continue smoothly in his absence. No official engagements have been scheduled in South Africa, according to State House.
The President has made similar private trips in the past for rest and medical checkups. His office says he will return to Lilongwe within days to resume official duties.
Vice President and Cabinet ministers are expected to oversee day-to-day government business while the President is away.
The departure comes as Malawi continues to handle various domestic and regional matters, but the President emphasized that all state affairs are stable.
South Africa remains a frequent destination for Malawian leaders for private, medical, and diplomatic visits due to its proximity and facilities.
State House has not disclosed further details of the trip, citing its private nature.
