Southern Region Water Board(SRWB) has disclosed its plans to construct a multipurpose dam at Domasi in Zomba.

According to the board, the multi-purpose dam will include services like irrigation, aquaculture and hydropower generation.

Speaking in an interview with this publication, the board’s Public Relations Officer Ritta Makwangwala said apart from boosting water supply in the region, the dam intends to cushion food insecurity that is usually fueled by climate change effects like floods, erratic rains and dry spells in the district.

“We are planning to construct a multi-purpose dam. This dam will be contributing a lot towards the socio-economic growth of this country,”she said.

However, commenting on the matter, Zomba Malosa Constituency parliamentarian Grace Kwelepeta has expressed optimism that apart from potable water, the dam will contribute to food security in the area.

“The communities will no longer depend on rain-fed agriculture only,” said Kwelepeta.

SRWB is the largest water service provider in the southern part of Malawi.

Established as a parastatal organization in 1995 under the Waterworks Act Cap 72:0, the Board officially launched its operations on 1st May 1998 inheriting its infrastructure from the then District Water Supply Fund of the Ministry of works, Supplies and Water Supply in the Southern Region.

Since its establishment, the Board has operated under the Ministry of Water and Irrigation (1998), the Ministry of Forest and Natural Resources (2020) and is now currently under the Ministry of Water and Sanitation.
