Speaker of Parliament Sameer Suleman on Wednesday September 2,2026 met President Arthur Peter Mutharika at State House in Lilongwe, with the two leaders discussing the relationship between the Executive and Legislature.
According to a media statement issued by the Office of the Speaker on Saturday, September 12, 2026, the meeting followed a press briefing held by Suleman on September 2, 2026.
The statement says the discussions also covered the implementation of a decision to establish Joint Committees to conduct inquiries into various areas of public service delivery.
However, the committees will not proceed following a court order issued on September 4, 2026, halting their implementation.
The Office of the Speaker says Parliament will comply with the court order and will not proceed with the Joint Committees while the order remains in force.
The meeting has also reaffirmed the importance of respecting the separation of powers among the three arms of government,the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary.
The development comes amid public attention over Suleman’s earlier announcement to establish the Joint Committees as part of Parliament’s oversight role on matters concerning public service delivery.
The committees were expected to strengthen parliamentary oversight and facilitate inquiries into issues affecting the delivery of public services.
According to the Speaker’s Office, both Mutharika and Suleman respect the constitutional roles of the three arms of government.
The meeting comes as the Executive and Legislature continue to engage on matters relating to the functioning of government within the country’s constitutional framework.
