President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika will be represented by Minister of Education Bright Msaka at a memorial service marking two years since the death of former Vice President Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima.
The event is expected to attract several prominent political figures, including former Malawi Electoral Commission chairperson who is currently first vice president Dr. Jane Ansah and Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) president Enock Chihana second vice president.
Dr. Chilima and eight others died in a military aircraft crash in Chikangawa on June 10, 2024, in a tragedy that shocked the nation and left many Malawians in mourning.
Members of the Chilima family have organized the commemoration to honour the late Vice President’s life and legacy, while also unveiling improvements made at the site where his remains were laid to rest.
The memorial ceremony will take place at Nsipe in Ntcheu District, where hundreds of mourners and supporters are expected to gather.
Former President Dr. Joyce Banda is among the senior national leaders expected to attend the event and pay tribute to the late statesman.
Former vice presidents Cassim Chilumpha, Khumbo Kachali and Michael Usi are also expected to be present at the ceremony.
The gathering is expected to provide an opportunity for reflection on Dr. Chilima’s contribution to Malawi’s political and public life.
Since his death, calls for accountability and remembrance have continued, with supporters maintaining that his vision for national development should not be forgotten.
