At least 35 young men have died during South Africa’s 2026 traditional initiation season, prompting renewed calls for stricter enforcement of safety regulations at initiation schools across the country.
South Africa’s Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Velenkosini Hlabisa, expressed concern over the rising number of deaths and injuries linked to traditional initiation practices during the current winter season.
According to the ministry, the deaths were recorded up to 12 July 2026, with Mpumalanga Province reporting the highest number of fatalities at 17.
The Eastern Cape recorded seven deaths, while North West Province reported four. Limpopo registered three deaths and Gauteng and the Free State each recorded two fatalities.
Ministry spokesperson Pearl Maseko described the deaths as tragic and extended condolences to the bereaved families, saying every preventable death during the initiation season is deeply concerning.
She urged parents and guardians to ensure that boys attend only government approved initiation schools, where health and safety standards are monitored to reduce risks.
The ministry also warned that individuals operating illegal initiation schools or failing to comply with South African laws would face legal action.
Authorities say inspections and monitoring of initiation schools will continue throughout the season to protect initiates and prevent further loss of life.
At least 58 initiation schools operating in South Africa are believed to be illegal, exposing young initiates to unsafe conditions and unregulated practices.
Traditional male initiation remains an important cultural rite of passage in several South African communities but the recurring deaths have intensified calls for stronger regulation and better protection of young participants.
