A letter signed by Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) spokesperson Shadric Namalomba and dated June 21, 2025, confirms that former Malawian president Peter Mutharika, 84, has withdrawn from the September 2025 presidential race. The document, circulating on social media and verified by party insiders, states the DPP will now endorse Dalitso Kabambe as its candidate .
The decision follows mounting pressure within the party over Mutharika’s advanced age and health concerns. A recent video showing him appearing frail upon returning from South Africa intensified calls for his exit, with critics arguing Malawi needs “younger, more energetic leadership” . The letter emphasizes the party’s shift to Kabambe, a former Reserve Bank governor, as a strategic move to unify opposition forces against incumbent Lazarus Chakwera .

While Mutharika’s camp had previously dismissed withdrawal rumors as “hoaxes,” the signed letter signals an internal consensus. Kabambe, once a Mutharika ally, had earlier defected from DPP to pursue his presidential ambitions but now returns as the party’s standard-bearer . Analysts note the move aims to consolidate support amid factional disputes and voter fatigue with aging leadership .
The DPP is expected to formally announce Kabambe’s candidacy next week.
