MCP Reflects on Electoral Defeat as Party Eyes Political Comeback

By Rahim Abdul

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) says it has completed an internal review aimed at understanding the factors that led to its removal from government, with the findings expected to shape the party’s future political strategy.

MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila said the party has been conducting a thorough assessment of its time in office and the reasons behind voters’ decision to remove it from power.

Kabwila explained that the review process has involved gathering views from different stakeholders and examining both the successes and shortcomings of the party’s administration.

According to her, the findings from the assessment will soon be shared publicly and are expected to help the party reposition itself ahead of future elections.

She expressed confidence that the lessons learned from the review will enable MCP to rebuild public trust and strengthen its chances of returning to government by 2030.

Kabwila further claimed that feedback collected from various parts of the country indicates that many Malawians still see the party as a viable political alternative and would like to see it return to leadership.

The MCP spokesperson acknowledged that the party’s administration faced criticism on several issues during its time in office, but maintained that significant development projects were implemented despite the challenges.

Among the achievements highlighted by Kabwila were infrastructure projects, particularly road construction and rehabilitation initiatives undertaken during the party’s tenure.

She also emphasized that the party prioritized the welfare of farmers, arguing that agricultural development remained a central pillar of MCP’s governance agenda.

As political parties begin positioning themselves for future electoral contests, MCP’s latest reflections signal an effort to reconnect with voters, address past shortcomings and present itself as a stronger contender for national leadership in the years ahead.
