MCP’s Chalo Mvula rallies support for Chakwera, urges Malawians to choose progress

By Burnett Munthali

The Second Deputy Director of International Affairs in the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Chalo Mvula, has issued a passionate appeal to Malawians ahead of next week’s elections.

Writing on his official Facebook page, Mvula described Tuesday’s vote as “pivotal” for the nation’s future.

He said the ballot would define the country’s direction for the next five years.

He posed a sharp question to Malawians: should the country continue building on the strong foundations of progress, or risk returning to what he called the dark days of rampant corruption, crippling nepotism, and the disregard for the rule of law?

At the same time, Mvula bemoaned the absence of a diaspora voting law, saying it was unfortunate that Malawians abroad remain excluded from a democratic process that will shape their nation’s future.

He argued that the lack of diaspora voting rights undermines inclusivity and denies citizens living outside the country the opportunity to participate in decisions that directly affect Malawi’s development.

According to Mvula, the choice before Malawians who will cast their ballots remains clear.

He argued that safeguarding democracy and ensuring continued development requires Malawians to stand firm in their decision.

Mvula called on the electorate to move forward together by retaining MCP leader Dr. Lazarus Chakwera.

He further endorsed the leadership ticket that pairs President Chakwera with Vitumbiko AZ Mumba, Pr Eng, as Vice President.

In his words, the re-election of the duo represents a vote for stability, continuity, and progress.

He summed up his message with a strong rallying cry: “Vote for progress. Vote to re-elect Dr. Lazarus Chakwera as President of Malawi and Vitumbiko AZ Mumba, Pr Eng, as the Vice President.”

Mvula stressed that the future of Malawi rests in the hands of the people.

He added that the decision they make at the ballot box will determine whether the country consolidates its gains or risks regression.

Chalo Mvula’s message underscores the defining stakes of the 2025 elections: continuity versus regression.

By framing the vote as a clear-cut choice between progress and past governance failures, he attempts to anchor the MCP’s campaign narrative around stability, accountability, and development.

At the same time, his concerns about diaspora voting expose a weakness in Malawi’s democratic system.

For a party championing inclusivity, the absence of legislation enabling Malawians abroad to vote remains a significant gap.

Until addressed, it will continue to raise questions about whether Malawi’s democracy truly speaks for all its citizens.
