Four killed in Nsanje, Chikwawa over false ‘manhood disappearance’ rumours

By Rahim Abdul

The Malawi Police Service has strongly condemned a wave of mob justice attacks in Chikwawa and Nsanje districts that have left four people dead and another seriously injured following rumours linked to alleged disappearance of male private parts.

According to police, the violence erupted between May 8 and 9 after unverified claims spread rapidly within communities, sparking fear, confusion and anger among residents who later turned against suspected individuals.

In a statement released by police public relations officer Senior Superintendent Lael Chimtembo, authorities described the allegations as fabricated and dangerous, warning the public against taking the law into their own hands.

Police have since arrested five suspects in connection with the attacks and the spreading of false information. Among those arrested are 18-year-old Wisted Frank from Chikwawa, a 15-year-old boy from Nsanje and Hudson Thomas, 26, who is alleged to have made accusations that fueled the violence.

The victims who lost their lives have been identified as Yobe Ching’oma, Migresi Mussa, Madalitso Joe William and Baza Sande.

Meanwhile, police have appealed to Malawians to verify information before sharing it and to report suspicious matters to law enforcement agencies instead of resorting to violence.

Authorities say investigations into the incidents are still underway as security agencies continue efforts to restore calm in the affected communities.
