The football community in Zambia has been left in shock following the brutal killing of a 55-year-old referee, Donald Tonga, during a local football tournament in Chipangali District, Eastern Province.
According to reports from Zambia, Tonga was allegedly attacked by angry players and supporters after a controversial decision during a replay match involving Mikango United and Leopard United at Mchenga Primary School Grounds.
Reports indicate that the violence erupted in the first half after the referee failed to award a foul, a decision that reportedly angered some players from Mikango United.
Witnesses say the situation quickly turned chaotic as players and supporters allegedly chased the referee around the pitch before assaulting him with fists, kicks, sticks and stones.
Tonga reportedly sustained serious injuries, including a deep cut to the head, before collapsing at the scene.
He was later rushed to Chamasongo Clinic where medical personnel pronounced him dead on arrival.
The match was part of a local tournament with a K5,000 prize, and reports indicate Tonga was officiating the game alone without assistant referees or linesmen.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation across Zambia’s football circles, with many calling for stronger security measures and discipline in grassroots football competitions.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba has confirmed the incident, saying police have arrested three suspects linked to the attack while investigations continue.
Authorities say several other suspects are still on the run as police intensify investigations into the matter.
The tragic death of Tonga has also raised concerns over the safety of match officials in community football tournaments across the region.
Football stakeholders in Zambia are now urging organizers to improve security arrangements during local competitions to avoid similar incidents in future.
