The newly accredited Chief of Mission for the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Fatma Ismail Said, has reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting Malawi in strengthening migration governance and border security systems.

Said made the remarks on Tuesday during a courtesy call on Minister of Homeland Security Peter Mukhito at Capital Hill in Lilongwe.

During the meeting, Said highlighted several areas in which IOM will continue collaborating with the Malawi Government.

These include strengthening integrated border management through the Migration Information and Data Analysis System (MIDAS), modernising border pass systems to facilitate smoother cross-border trade, supporting dignified repatriation and reintegration programmes, and promoting safe and regular labour migration pathways within Africa.

She said the partnership aims to enhance border management systems while ensuring migration contributes positively to economic growth and regional integration.

On his part,Mukhito commended IOM for its continued partnership with Malawi, particularly at a time when the country is experiencing increasing migration pressures and evolving border security challenges.

He described IOM as a key development partner in advancing Malawi’s migration management agenda and strengthening institutional capacity in the homeland security sector.
