In the annals of Malawi’s political history, the contrast between President Peter Mutharika and former President Lazarus Chakwera is striking and revealing.
While Chakwera captivated crowds with his charismatic presence and theatrical flair, often resembling an entertainer more than a statesman, Mutharika has quietly dedicated himself to the relentless work of governance, embodying the essence of a true leader committed to the nation’s progress.
Chakwera’s tenure was marked by moments that seemed more like performances than policies.
A notable image that stuck with many was the former president riding a motorcycle during a foreign trip, a spectacle that drew applause but masked the harsh economic realities Malawi faced. Inflation soared, goods and services became increasingly unaffordable, and hospitals struggled with drug shortages.

Meanwhile, Chakwera’s public displays—whether doing push-ups in Blantyre or mingling with crowds—painted him as a leader more interested in showmanship than substantive solutions.
His alliance with Michael Usi, a celebrated actor known as Manganya, as his vice president only underscored the theatrical nature of his administration.
In stark contrast stands Peter Mutharika, an embodiment of dedication and tireless effort. Unlike his predecessor, Mutharika has been seen working from early morning until well past midnight, sometimes extending into the early hours, committed to steering Malawi through complex challenges.
His leadership style is that of a performer who understands that true governance is not about applause but about results.
His focus on working tirelessly reflects a deep sense of responsibility and an unwavering commitment to the welfare of Malawians.
Malawi is blessed to have Peter Mutharika at the helm—a leader who chooses action over theatrics and substance over spectacle.
In a time when the nation needs steady hands and clear vision, Mutharika’s performance in office shines as a beacon of hope and resilience, proving that true leadership is measured by dedication and results, not by applause and showmanship.
