BEAM: Gertrude Mutharika’s gift of hope that Is redefining charity in Malawi

Since 2014, Malawi has witnessed many initiatives come and go, but few have carried the quiet strength and lasting impact of the Beautify Malawi Trust, BEAM.

Founded and chaired by First Lady Prof. Gertrude Mutharika, BEAM was established not on the back of politics, but on the foundation of service, compassion and a deep love for the Malawian people.

From the very beginning, the Trust set itself apart by focusing on what truly matters: the wellbeing of ordinary citizens.

Over the years, BEAM has grown into the most successful foundation ever led by a Malawian First Lady.

While previous First Ladies launched initiatives of their own, BEAM stands alone in its scale, consistency and tangible results.

It has touched lives in every region, without fanfare and without political branding. Its work speaks for itself.

In education, BEAM has paid tuition for secondary and tertiary students, built girls’ hostels, and championed the “Keep the Girl in School” program that secured K21 million from China to sponsor 350 girls. These are not just numbers. They are futures rescued, dreams protected, and families given hope.

In health and sanitation, the Trust adopted hospitals including Bwaila, Mzuzu Urban, Balaka, Thyolo and Rumphi, rehabilitating infrastructure and supplying sanitation materials to ensure patients are treated with dignity in cleaner environments.

Environmentally, BEAM has led nationwide tree planting and afforestation programs, and created BEAM clubs in secondary schools to nurture a generation that values a clean Malawi.

When disaster struck, BEAM was there — distributing food to flood-affected families and donating K100 million in festive hampers to the elderly and vulnerable.

The Trust also extends support to institutions like Mai Mbambande Elderly Home and Temwa Chilenga orphan care, proving that no group is too small to be remembered.

What drives this success is leadership. Prof. Gertrude Mutharika embodies the values BEAM promotes: calm in crisis, kind in word, and generous in action.

As Matron, she has mobilized partners such as FDH Bank, NBS Bank and NICO Group, and inspired pledges like the K300 million commitment honored by Prophet Shepherd Bushiri.

Under National Coordinator Dingiswayo Jere, BEAM relaunched in early 2026 with a new 2026-2030 strategy centered on sustainability, community ownership and national reach.

BEAM is not a political foundation. It is a people’s foundation. It does not seek power. It seeks progress.

For the thousands of students learning, the patients healing in better wards, and the families fed in hard times, BEAM has delivered where it counts. For initiating and nurturing this legacy, Prof. Gertrude Mutharika deserves the highest praise.

Her vision has turned compassion into action, and action into a national movement that will benefit Malawians for generations to come.
