Our investigation reveals a deeper layer behind the recent press briefing by Malawi’s Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Sameer Suleman, where he emphasized that parliamentary committees must not be ceremonial but should rigorously hold public institutions accountable.
While the Speaker outlined twelve key issues for parliamentary probes, including the tobacco sector, our findings suggest that his focus on tobacco is closely tied to personal interests.
Eastbridge, licensed in early 2025 as the 11th tobacco buyer for the 2024/2025 selling season by the Tobacco Commission, has stirred significant attention.
The entry of Eastbridge was officially welcomed as a move to increase competition on tobacco auction floors, improve prices for farmers, and reduce exploitation by middlemen.
However, our investigation has uncovered that Hon. Suleman is not just an observer in this sector.
He is a partner in Eastbridge, and notably, his son holds a senior position within the company.
This connection raises questions about the impartiality of his public statements and the true motivation behind the parliamentary probes on tobacco.
The Speaker’s recent call for oversight and accountability appeared to serve as a platform to shield his interests in Eastbridge.
While publicly advocating for transparency and the welfare of Malawian farmers, the underlying message may be to protect and promote the tobacco buyer with which he is affiliated.
The tobacco sector remains Malawi’s largest foreign exchange earner, and control over the market can yield substantial influence and financial benefits.
Eastbridge’s licensing by the Tobacco Commission followed due processes, and it joined a competitive market with established players like Limbe Leaf, Alliance One, and JTI Leaf Malawi.
Yet the Speaker’s dual role—as a public official championing oversight and as a business partner in a tobacco company—poses a potential conflict of interest that warrants thorough examination.
We urge relevant authorities and parliamentary oversight bodies to investigate the Speaker’s involvement with Eastbridge to ensure that public office is not being leveraged for personal gain.
Transparency and accountability must apply equally to all, including those at the highest levels of government.
The integrity of Parliament and confidence in Malawi’s tobacco industry depend on impartiality and trust.
This revelation calls for the public’s attention and a robust probe to uphold the principles of good governance.
As Malawi looks to strengthen its tobacco sector and protect farmers’ interests, it is critical that those entrusted with oversight maintain independence and avoid any appearance of self-interest.
