United Democratic Front (UDF) President Atupele Muluzi has called for greater protection of Malawian migrants in South Africa, saying the values of unity, dignity and dialogue championed by the late Nelson Mandela must guide efforts to address migration challenges across the continent.
Speaking after participating in high-level discussions in Pretoria on Saturday to mark Nelson Mandela Day, Muluzi said the annual commemoration offers an opportunity to reflect on Mandela’s legacy at a time when South Africa continues to face economic hardships, inequality and growing social divisions.
He expressed concern over the recent treatment of African migrants, noting that although people from several countries have been affected, Malawians have been among those hardest hit by anti-migrant sentiments.
Muluzi said the targeting of migrants undermines the principles of constitutionalism, human dignity and peaceful dialogue that Mandela dedicated his life to promoting, stressing that social and economic challenges should never be resolved by turning communities against one another.
During the event, the UDF leader held discussions with South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Social Development, Mogamad Ganief Ebrahim Hendricks, who also leads the Al Jama-ah Political Party and is a longtime associate of the late Nelson Mandela.
According to Muluzi, the meeting focused on the welfare of migrants, particularly Malawians living in South Africa, and explored ways of improving their protection.
He said one of the key issues discussed was the need to provide amnesty for undocumented children, describing the proposal as an important humanitarian step.
Muluzi further urged that such compassion should be extended to all migrants regardless of nationality, saying Africa should embrace the spirit of unity and shared humanity.
He said the vision of “One Africa” should encourage governments and citizens to work together in protecting vulnerable people while respecting human rights and the rule of law.
As Africa commemorates Nelson Mandela’s legacy, Muluzi called on leaders and citizens across the continent to recommit themselves to building societies founded on dignity, inclusion and equal opportunities for everyone.
