Atupele Muluzi condemns tear-gassing of President Chakwera at Kamuzu Mausoleum

By Durell Namasani

United Democratic Front (UDF) president Atupele Muluzi has described Wednesday’s tear-gassing of President Lazarus Chakwera at the Kamuzu Mausoleum as “deeply unfortunate”, saying the incident must be condemned by all peace-loving Malawians.

In a Facebook post, Muluzi said Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda was not only Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president but also the Founding Father of the Republic, and moments of national remembrance should unite Malawians regardless of tribe, religion or political affiliation.

“The Presidency is a national institution that must always be respected and protected. Any sitting or former Head of State deserves dignity, recognition and respect in the discharge of national duties,” Muluzi wrote.

He called on Malawians and Africans to uphold togetherness, tolerance and unity, adding that political differences must never erode shared humanity or the nation’s dignity.

“This incident requires reflection, restraint and condemnation from all those who believe in peace, democracy and national unity,” he said.

Chakwera and MCP supporters were tear-gassed and prevented from laying wreaths at the mausoleum during Kamuzu Day commemorations. The government has yet to issue a formal response.
