Social commentator and Contributor Stanley Onjezani Kenani, has appealed to President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to use his good offices to ensure that Activist Sylvester Namiwa is not charged with Treason.

Kenani said he understands that Namiwa may be charged with Treason for allegedly stating on Luntha Television station that the Vice President Justice Dr. Jane Ansah SC RTD would rule this country within two months.
He said he is even accepting that such a statement by Namiwa was reckless, insensitive and wholly inappropriate respectfully asking whether it can reasonably justify the grave charge.
Writing on his face book page, Kenani has advised Mutharika that invoking one of the most serious offences known to the country’s laws in response to such remarks, risks diminishing the seriousness of the charge itself and undermining the democratic image his administration has carefully cultivated since returning to office in September, 2025.
Kenani said it is against this background that he has written an open letter to President Professor Mutharika expressing his deep concern regarding the arrest of Mr. Sylvester Namiwa describing him as one of the few remaining voices in civil society who has consistently spoken with courage and conviction.
The Activist said this has been possible, in part, because Mutharika’s government has allowed democracy, and particularly freedom of expression to flourish.
“The atmosphere is markedly different from your first term when public frustration frequently spilled onto the streets,” reads Kenani’s writings on the wall.
He has praised Professor Mutharika that over the past ten months, his administration has made commendable efforts to steady the economy.
The Activist has claimed that many Malawians are undoubtedly hurting under the increased tax burden, but they have largely accepted these hardships with remarkable patience believing that the sacrifices are necessary if the economy is to recover.
Kenani has expressed hope that his appeal with the utmost respect for Mutharika’s office and with sincere hope that he will give it serious consideration that the Treason charge be reconsidered and that Namiwa must be released from police custody.
