Minister of Local Government & Rural Development Hon. Dr. Ben Malunga Phiri on Tuesday commissioned the newly built Chinsapo Extended Health Centre at UNICEF Ground in Lilongwe, marking another step in his push to bring essential services closer to residents.
Constructed and fully equipped by AIDS Healthcare Foundation, AHF, the facility is expected to ease pressure on nearby clinics while expanding access to primary healthcare for Chinsapo and surrounding areas. Services at the centre include HIV testing and counselling, maternal and child health, and other routine treatments aimed at reducing long travel times and wait hours for patients.
Addressing residents and health workers during the handover, Dr. Phiri emphasized prevention as the most sustainable path for the nation’s health. He urged community members to prioritize HIV prevention measures, saying consistent public education and early testing will reduce the burden on clinics and families.
The minister described the new centre as proof that government and partners can deliver tangible results when projects are tracked closely and completed on schedule.
Dr. Phiri, known for frequent field visits and follow-ups on local projects, commended AHF for investing in infrastructure that aligns with government priorities. He noted that strong partnerships allow public funds to stretch further while communities receive modern facilities staffed to serve them daily.
Deputy Minister of Health Hon. Charles Chilambula said the ministry will work with local councils to ensure the centre is fully staffed and supplied.
AHF Global Board Member Diana Hoorzuk reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to expanding support for Malawi’s health sector and collaborating with district authorities to keep facilities operational.
Traditional leaders and residents welcomed the development, saying the centre will cut costs and save time for mothers, children, and elderly patients who previously traveled long distances for basic care.
The commissioning adds to a series of local development projects Dr. Phiri has championed, reflecting his hands-on approach to ensuring that government programs translate into working clinics, clean water points, and functional community infrastructure for Malawians.
