President Dr.Lazarus Chakwera has described football as an important aspect of life as it unites and brings people of different backgrounds together.
Chakwera was speaking on Thursday at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe where he hosted to a dinner National Football Teams that are participating in the Four Nations Tournament.
The President said his government is committed to improving sports development in the country.
He said the different sports facilities that his government are constructing is part of his government’s commitment to develop sports.
“Sports development is part of the country’s human capital development strategy for Malawi 2063.
“The government will continue the path it has taken in improving football facilities as it aims to host the Africa Cup of Nations in years to come,” said Chakwera.
The President said it is his dream to see Malawi hosting big tournaments like the Africa Cup of Nations in the near future.
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Fleetwood Haiya expressed gratitude to President Chakwera for hosting the four national football teams which are participating in the Four Nations tournament to a dinner.
“This is a demonstration of commitment from your Excellency towards the development of sports in the country. This is a testimony that you really want to develop sport.
“The tournament demonstrates the partnership of unity of purpose among football associations from the four countries,” said Haiya.
The tournament is starting from this Saturday at the magnificent Bingu National Stadium (BNS) in Lilongwe and the four nations participating are Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Kenya.
