Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Dr. Ben Malunga Phiri, on Saturday launched the construction of Malawi’s first double-storey rural growth centre market in Lilongwe City, a project hailed as a major milestone in the country’s Market Development Initiative.
The facility, funded by IFAD, the OPEC Fund and the Malawi Government, is designed to commercialise agriculture by strengthening value chains, improving market access for farmers and promoting value addition at community level.
What however captured the attention of those gathered was not just the launch itself, but the minister’s hands-on approach.
Known as a leader who shuns fanfare, Dr. Phiri was seen rolling up his sleeves and joining builders on site.
To the surprise of many, he picked up a trowel, scooped mortar and helped lay bricks, his hands covered in mud without a hint of worry.
It is that kind of leadership by example that has endeared him to many.
Throughout the event, Dr. Phiri moved freely among masons, traders and community members, listening, smiling and encouraging workers.
There was no distance, no airs — just a minister willing to get his hands dirty for the people he serves.
Those present could not hide their admiration. Vendors, local leaders and construction workers alike praised the hardworking minister for his zeal, kindness and easy association with everyone.
“This is a leader who works with us, not above us,” one trader said.
IFAD Country Director Bernadette Mukonyora said the market forms part of a $120 million trade programme targeting high-value commodities and rural infrastructure.
She noted that such leadership will be key to ensuring the project delivers real benefits to farmers.
For Dr. Phiri, the day was less about speeches and more about action — a reflection of a minister who believes development begins with service.
