FINALS FEVER: Malawians In Manchester Unite For Epic WAFCON Final Watch Party

By Durell Namasani

Malawians in the UK are in a state of euphoria as the national women’s football team, the Scorchers, prepare for their maiden Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final against Cameroon on Sunday evening.

In Manchester, the diaspora community has organised a high-energy watch party at Authentic City Church on Crowcroft Rd, Levenshulme, where fans will gather from 8pm UK time to witness the historic clash. Organisers have urged supporters to don red attire to create a sea of Malawian colours, turning the venue into a fortress of noise and pride.

The Scorchers’ fairytale run has captured hearts across the continent. After stunning defending champions Nigeria 3-2 in the quarter-finals and edging Ghana in the semis, Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga have been instrumental, netting nine of the team’s 12 tournament goals. A victory on Sunday would not only seal Malawi’s first continental title but also secure a record $2 million prize, cementing the Scorchers’ place in African football history.

While Manchester prepares for a raucous night, the passion extends far beyond. A contingent of Malawian diaspora supporters has already travelled to Casablanca to back the team live at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium, determined to be in the stands when history is written.

From the UK to North Africa, the nation stands united. With kick-off set for 8pm UK time (9pm local in Morocco), all eyes are on the Scorchers as they aim to turn decades of dreams into reality. Glory awaits – and Malawi is ready.
