Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Alfred Gangata has challenged Team Malawi to make history by winning medals at the 2026, Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Gangata made the remarks on Friday in Lilongwe during the official unveiling of the 45-member Team Malawi squad that will represent the country at the international multi-sport event.
The minister said it was time for Malawi to end its long wait for a Commonwealth Games medal after more than two decades of participation.
“We have been participating in these games for 26 years without any medal. Go now and bring something home,” Gangata told the athletes and officials.
He urged the athletes to remain disciplined, focused and determined as they prepare to compete against some of the world’s best sportsmen and women.
Gangata also assured the team of the government’s support and encouraged them to represent the country with pride throughout the competition.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2.
Malawi will compete in five sporting disciplines: athletics, netball, judo, swimming and boxing.
The 45-member delegation includes athletes, coaches and team officials who will be responsible for representing the country during the Games.
Team Malawi will be hoping to produce its best-ever performance and secure the nation’s first Commonwealth Games medals since joining the competition 26 years ago.
