People in the country seeking longer-lasting protection against HIV can now access Lenacapavir (LEN), a long-acting injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) that provides protection for six months.
The Ministry of Health and Sanitation says Lenacapavir is now available at selected health facilities across the country as an additional HIV prevention option.
Before receiving the injection, individuals seeking Lenacapavir will undergo HIV testing, risk assessment and counselling to determine their suitability for the prevention method.
The ministry has since encouraged the public to make use of available HIV prevention services as part of ongoing efforts to reduce new HIV infections across Malawi.
Lenacapavir is being introduced alongside existing HIV prevention services, providing an additional option for people who may benefit from long-acting PrEP.
