Malawi Congress Party National Campaign Director Moses Kunkuyu has rewarded academic excellence in Dedza Mulunduni with school supplies and financial support for 170 students who passed the Primary School Leaving Certificate Examinations and have been selected to secondary school.
The donation ceremony took place at Makota Teacher Development Centre, where Kunkuyu, who is also the Member of Parliament for Dedza Mulunduni, presented travel bags, school bags and cash to the learners.
The event also honored teachers for the role they played in guiding the students to success.
Addressing learners, parents and teachers, Kunkuyu said investing in education is investing in the future of communities.
He thanked teachers for their sacrifice and hard work, noting that their dedication is what keeps children in class and moving up the academic ladder despite the challenges.
“Education is the greatest equalizer. When our children succeed, the whole constituency succeeds,” Kunkuyu said,adding that, “I am proud of these 170 students and the teachers who stood with them. We must continue supporting them so no child is left behind.”
The initiative was organized through the MP’s office and his foundation.
Apart from the PSLCE support, the foundation is currently sponsoring 54 youths from the area who are pursuing tertiary education in colleges and universities across the country.
Father Andrew Mtendere of the Roman Catholic Church, who attended the event, welcomed the gesture.
He said partnerships between leaders, the church and communities are critical to raising education standards in rural areas and pledged the church’s continued support for such programs.
Parents and guardians praised the support, saying the bags and cash will ease the burden of buying basic school requirements as the new term begins.
Teachers also said the recognition motivates them to work even harder.
Kunkuyu said more interventions in education, health and youth empowerment are lined up for Dedza Mulunduni as part of efforts to create opportunities for young people and build a stronger constituency.
The MP urged the beneficiaries to use the opportunity well, work hard in secondary school, and become ambassadors of change in their communities.
