Malawi has earned K496 billion from this year’s tobacco marketing season which has officially closed today after 21 weeks of trading, writes Phillimon Backson.
The Tobacco Commission’ spokesperson, Telephorus Chigwenembe disclosed this on 10 September, 2026 and saying the country has sold a total of 144.5 million kilogrammes of tobacco at an average price of US$1.98 per kilogramme.

Chigwenembe has since described the season as successful despite challenges that affected the market, citing the high rejection rates recorded for tobacco sold through the auction system.
He has however explained that one of the key achievements of the season was the amicable resolution of emerging challenges through engagement with stakeholders.
According to the Commission, the engagements helped address concerns raised by key players in the tobacco industry, including ensuring that farmers received their proceeds on time and maintaining a smooth flow of tobacco sales throughout the marketing season.
Meanwhile, TAMA Farmers Trust President Abel Kalima Banda has described the decline as retrogressive in the tobacco industry, hence calling for concerted efforts among stakeholders to revive the tobacco industry.
