Malawi earns K260.8 billion from tobbaco sales in the ninth week of sales

By Phillimon Backson

Malawi has generated about 260.8 billion (US$149 million) in the nine week of 2026 tobbaco marketing season between 20 April  and 19  June, 2026.

This represents a decline compared to 2025 marketing season as the country generated million about K375 billion.

According to Tobacco Commission Spokesperson, Telephorus Chigwenembe, the decline comes amid reduced tobacco volumes and lower prices on the market.

Chigwenembe says farmers sold 71.8 million kilograms of tobacco this year, down from 86.5 million kilograms sold during the same period last year, representing a 17 percent decrease.

He adds that despite signs of improvement in market uptake during recent weeks, tobacco rejection rates at auction floors remain high, ranging between 60 and 62 percent.
