Minister Navicha says widows’ plight needs urgent action as ministry meets widows association

By Jones Gadama

Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare,Mary Navicha, has described the situation of widows in Malawi as a crisis that demands urgent intervention and collective responsibility from all stakeholders.

The Minister made the statement during a courtesy meeting with the Widows Association of Malawi, led by Board Chairperson Andrian Mchiela, held at the Ministry’s headquarters in Lilongwe on Tuesday.

The engagement brought together ministry officials and widows’ representatives to review the major challenges affecting widows, including economic hardship, limited access to livelihood opportunities, and persistent social stigma.

Both parties also discussed ways to strengthen collaboration and expand protection for widows’ rights.

Minister Navicha reaffirmed government’s commitment to partner with civil society groups to improve welfare programmes and ensure widows are included in social protection initiatives.

She said addressing widows’ challenges requires more than policy on paper — it needs action at community level to stop abuse, property dispossession, and exclusion.

Andrian Mchiela commended the Ministry for opening dialogue and urged faster implementation of laws protecting inheritance and property rights.

She said many widows still face neglect after losing spouses, making structured support and empowerment programmes critical.

The Widows Association pledged to continue mobilizing members across districts to take part in skills training and advocacy campaigns.

The Ministry, in turn, said it will review existing interventions to make them more responsive to widows’ realities.
