MMRA welcomes  Muhara as new DG

By Chisomo Phiri

The Mining and Minerals Regulatory Authority (MMRA) has ushered in a new era of leadership following the appointment of Lloyd Muhara as its Director General (DG ).

Muhara was officially introduced to management and staff during a welcome meeting held on Monday.

Human Resources and Administration Manager Bright Kazembe formally presented Muhara to employees, describing the occasion as a significant milestone for the Authority as it works to strengthen its institutional capacity and regulatory mandate.

In his remarks, Muhara said he joins MMRA with more than 20 years of experience drawn from both the public and private sectors, where collaboration, professionalism, and effective teamwork are key drivers of organisational success.

He observed that although MMRA is still a relatively young and developing institution, it has strong potential to grow into a major regulatory body within the next five to ten years, particularly as Malawi’s mining sector continues to expand.

“The mining sector is central to Malawi’s economic transformation, and MMRA has a critical responsibility in ensuring that this growth is well regulated and sustainable,” said  Muhara.

He further pledged to promote an open and accessible leadership approach, encouraging staff to freely engage with his office on operational and institutional matters to enhance efficiency and performance.

Muhara expressed appreciation for the warm reception extended to him by management and staff, saying he looked forward to working collaboratively to advance the Authority’s mandate.

Closing the meeting, Kazembe commended the new Director General for taking time to meet employees and share encouraging remarks.

He also urged staff to remain committed to improving performance and delivering on MMRA’s objectives.

Muhara previously held several senior positions in Malawi’s public service, including Commissioner General(CG) of the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), Chief Secretary (CS) to the Government and Cabinet, and also served as a Judge of the High Court of Malawi.

The MMRA was set up to serve as an independent regulatory body responsible for overseeing all mining and mineral activities in Malawi.

It became operational after government efforts to modernize the mining sector and improve oversight of increasing mineral exploration and extraction activities in the country.

Its establishment reflects Malawi’s broader goal of using the mining sector as a key driver of economic growth while ensuring that mineral resources benefit Malawians in a sustainable and responsible way.
