MRA Strengthens Media Training to Promote Tax Compliance in Malawi

By Burnett Munthali

The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) says a well-informed media plays a critical role in promoting tax compliance and improving public understanding of tax administration in the country.

MRA Head of Corporate Affairs Wilma Chalulu made the remarks as the authority continues engaging and training journalists on new tax measures, procedures and developments within the taxation sector.

Chalulu said the training programme is designed to equip media practitioners with accurate knowledge of tax reforms and emerging issues so that they can provide balanced and informative reporting to the public.

She explained that an informed media can help simplify complex tax issues, address misconceptions and encourage citizens to voluntarily comply with their tax obligations.

According to Chalulu, the media remains an important partner in helping government institutions communicate effectively with taxpayers and promote transparency in revenue collection.

One of the participants, journalist Duncan Mlanjira, commended MRA for introducing the initiative, saying the training has improved journalists’ understanding of tax administration, revenue mobilization and their contribution to national development.

Mlanjira said increased knowledge among journalists would enable the media to provide more accurate coverage of tax-related matters and help citizens understand the importance of paying taxes.

The MRA is currently implementing several measures aimed at strengthening tax collection and improving efficiency in revenue administration.

Among the initiatives being promoted is the Electronic Invoicing System, which seeks to enhance Value Added Tax (VAT) collection by improving monitoring and compliance among businesses.

The authority is also conducting public awareness campaigns on rental income tax as part of efforts to broaden the tax base and ensure that all eligible taxpayers meet their obligations.

MRA says continued collaboration with the media will remain essential in building public trust, encouraging voluntary compliance and supporting Malawi’s economic development through improved domestic revenue mobilization.
