By Memory Kutengule Chatonda

Southern region based religious leaders have hailed President Lazarus Chakwera for demonstrating servant leadership and non selective approach as he continues to build the new Malawi.

President of Ministers Network, Apostle Samuel Vinkhumbo made the remarks on Thursday in Blantyre when President Chakwera held an interface meeting with 300 faith leaders at Sanjika palace.

Vikhumbo observed that Malawians acknowledge different developments that are being implemented in various parts of the country under the leadership of President Chakwera.

He cited the establishment of Mega farms as well as rehabilitation of critical infrastructures among others to benefit all Malawians.

“Because of this, we pledge our commitment to support Chakwera administration for continued development,” said Vinkhumbo who was also the leader of delegation.

He then commended Chakwera administration for facilitating peace and unity among people of different religious affiliations.

In his remarks, Special Advisor to the President on Religious Affairs Rev Brian Kamwendo said Chakwera appreciates the role faith leaders play in spearheading socio-economic development in the country.

“These are a significant group because they are the ones that interact with people on the ground and disseminate messages on government agenda precisely development,” he said.

The meeting was part of the president’s ongoing engagement with various stakeholders in the southern region to discuss developmental issues.

The faith leaders were drawn from nine religious coalitions such as Muslim Association of Malawi, Kanjedza Sisters, Rastafarian church, Blantyre Worship centre, Religious leaders organisation among others.

NOCMA case: Chizuma applies for the case adjournment

Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Director General Martha Chizuma has made an application for adjournment of the case in which former presidential advisor Chris Chaima Banda and others are accused of attempting to influence award of fuel contracts at National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA).

Chizuma said the State witness Helen Buluma is not ready to continue with cross -examination and so is the state.

Chizuma

The case resumed this morning for continuation of cross-examination of the state witness.

“Cross examination is part of the right to fair trial. In choosing fair trial there is also need to balance the interest of the State,” said Chizuma.

She further said the court should consider that Buluma has made herself available before court including today although she is not ready for the cross-examination.

“We understand that the cross-examination is crucial for a fair trial and also need to balance the rights of the complainant, in this case, the state. Following our discussion with our witness, it is clear that we are not going to proceed.

“It is our prayer that as you consider our application for adjournment, you consider that the witness has made herself available to the court,” added Chizuma.

Chizuma also submitted that there have been several applications for adjournments by the defence despite Buluma being available.

She then asked that the matter be adjourned to a date when the witness and State will be ready.

On his part, defence lawyer Wapona Kita said it was difficult for him to respond to the application for adjournment as the State has not explained the reason why Buluma is not ready to be cross-examined.

“The question I am asking myself is; is she sick? I don’t know how I should respond to an application for an adjournment that she is not ready to proceed without reasons,” explained Kita.

Another defence lawyer Khumbo Soko said the witness is trying to run away from cross-examination and should not be allowed to escape.

He said Buluma has to face the heat.

He added that the defence was giving valid reasons for adjournments but ACB is not giving reasons.

Yesterday, Kita threatened that the defence will expose the alleged misconduct of Buluma during her tenure at NOCMA.

He said the former NOCMA Deputy CEO awarded fuel contracts to a supplier that never participated in bidding for fuel supply contracts.

The defence lawyer also told the court how Buluma’s recordings were not fit to be part of the evidence in court as Justice Patrick Chirwa gave a ruling on the issue, as Buluma was in the wrong to have recorded people without their consent.

In contrast, Imran Saidi, the Chief Legal and Prosecution Officer for ACB, emphasized during cross-examination that questioning is commonly framed to unsettle and disorient the witness.

Former Energy Minister Newton Kambala, Chaima Banda, and Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) President Enoch Chihana are facing accusations of influencing fuel supply contracts at NOCMA.

They were arrested by the ACB in August 2021 before releasing them on bail.

Insubordination with a price

A wife’s responsibilities can be properly understood only in the context of loving, servant leadership by her husband. Be a helper to your husband. Respect your husband. Love your husband. Submit to the leadership of your husband. Helping my husband became who God intended him to be. How it all fits together.

The Deputy Headteacher works with the Headteacher to secure and sustain effective teaching and learning throughout the school. He/she assists the Headteacher in monitoring and evaluating the quality of teaching and standards of attainment, using relevant benchmarks and setting targets for improvement.

A deputy manager reports directly to the general manager of an organization and is responsible for assisting in the management procedures and operations. Your duties vary depending on the organization, but you typically have responsibilities related to budgeting and distribution of budgeted funds.

The vice president may seem like the second most powerful person in government, but in reality vice presidents act as assistants to the president. Throughout most of governments history, the vice president has had very little influence and a somewhat vague job description. So just what exactly does the vice president do? This article will explore the role and powers of the office of vice president.

The role and powers of the office of vice president.

The main power that the vice president wields is the power to succeed the president in case they are debilitated or die. In case of presidential removal, death, resignation, or disability, that the responsibilities of the vice president shall, “devolve on the vice president.” On that occasion, the vice president is sworn in as president. In America, the swearing in of the vice president as President happened eight times. This has happened only once during our nation’s history in Malawi:

Joyce Banda was sworn in on 7 April 2012 as President of Malawi, the first woman to hold the office. Chief Justice Lovemore Munlo presided over the ceremony which was held at the National Assembly in Lilongwe. After she was sworn in, Banda appealed for national unity.

The vice president’s duties and responsibilities are to succeed as president in the event the current president dies or resigns office, preside over the senate deliberations and cast any tie breaking votes, to serve as a representative of the president, and to serve as a member of the National Security Council.

“President and Vice President
Other than the constitutionally defined powers, the influence of the vice president is determined by the president. Some presidents want their vice presidents to take on more of a leadership role. Others maintain a cool relationship with vice presidents, and they are mostly pushed to the side.

Most modern presidents choose their vice president to balance the ticket. In other words, the vice president offers something different from the president. For example, President Barack Obama selected Joe Biden to be his running mate. Obama lacked extensive foreign policy experience. Biden was an experienced Senator with years of foreign policy experience under his belt.

Other presidential candidates may select vice presidents who live in a different geographic area or appeal to a different kind of voter within the party. Modern presidents have chosen vice presidents with extensive political experience and who are potential presidential candidates themselves.

Kondwani Nankhumwa was second-in-command and next in rank to the leader DPP. He had authority to give orders when the leader was not there, not the other way round.

The price

“When fighting with your boss, protect yourself first

Have you ever felt like your boss is out to get you? Maybe you’re paranoid. But then again, maybe not. There are a lot of bad bosses out there, leaders who aren’t stupid but lack emotional intelligence. Their self-awareness is strikingly low, they’re clueless when it comes to reading people, they can’t control their emotions, and their values seem to be on a permanent leave of absence.

A verbal fight with your boss is serious. You could be fired for cause due to insubordination. When you are angry with your boss, consider these strategies when dealing with a challenging manager:

Remain objective. Try to remain objective if your manager is upset. Take responsibility for your own actions. Establish healthy communication. Proactively manage your emotions. Set personal boundaries. Propose a solution.

However, there is still a widespread belief that arguing with your boss is a sign of disrespect. This view is often based on the assumption that the boss knows best and that questioning their decisions is a challenge to their authority. In reality, respectful disagreement can be a sign of strength and confidence.

It’s healthy to disagree with your boss, and he or she might even appreciate a different perspective — as long as you do it for the right reasons, in the right way. Not all bosses appreciate employees who dare to express conflicting views, particularly in more conservative cultures such as in Asia.

Conclusion

Similarly, when Kondwani Nankhumwa was appointed Vice President of the southern region, and later grabbed the position of leader of opposition in Parliament, he was second-in-command and next in rank to the President of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP ) and had authority to give orders when the leader was not there, not the other way round. Today Nankhumwa is paying the price for his insubordination, nothing else.

Two police officers Sub-Inspector Kasiton Matemba and Constable Brighton Mpombeza are behind bars for allegedly smuggling alcohol and a phone into a police cell in Karonga district, an incident which in the past few days threw members of the public into a frenzy of conversation.

National police spokesperson Peter Kalaya confirmed this to 247 Malawi News yesterday.

Kalaya said the two have been charged with two criminal counts of abuse of office and conduct at a police station, which are criminal cases in the Penal Code and Police Act.

He said: “What they did was unprofessional and not expected of a police officer in the MPS. Management cannot condone such kind of unprofessional behaviour in the service.”

This follows a viral video showing suspects in a police cell in Karonga hoisting and taking an alcoholic drink which is identified as Jägermeister.

The suspects who are seemingly excited from the drink were also making conversation with the person shooting the video.
