Two police officers Sub-Inspector Kasiton Matemba and Constable Brighton Mpombeza are behind bars for allegedly smuggling alcohol and a phone into a police cell in Karonga district, an incident which in the past few days threw members of the public into a frenzy of conversation.

National police spokesperson Peter Kalaya confirmed this to 247 Malawi News yesterday.

Kalaya said the two have been charged with two criminal counts of abuse of office and conduct at a police station, which are criminal cases in the Penal Code and Police Act.

He said: “What they did was unprofessional and not expected of a police officer in the MPS. Management cannot condone such kind of unprofessional behaviour in the service.”

This follows a viral video showing suspects in a police cell in Karonga hoisting and taking an alcoholic drink which is identified as Jägermeister.

The suspects who are seemingly excited from the drink were also making conversation with the person shooting the video.
