Mtambo talks peace as he opens international peace day

0

The Minister of Civic Education and National Unity   has said Malawi government will remain steadfast in its support of peace within the country as well as with our neighbours. He was speaking at the Official opening 2020 international day of peace commemoration conference on Monday at BICC in Lilongwe.

International day of peace was set aside by the United Nations General Assembly, as a day dedicated to advancing the ideals of peace. The day is being commemorated under the global theme: “Shaping Peace Together.”However, Malawi decided to commemorate the day under the localized theme: “Shaping Peace Together for Malawi”.

Mtambo said this year’s commemoration has come at a time when Malawians have ushered in a new Tonse Alliance Government, which has renewed commitment to unite Malawians as one of the five principles of the current leadership’s Super Hi5 Agenda. Govt has established the Ministry of Civic Education and National Unity and gave it a mandate of creating a conducive environment for civic empowerment of Malawians and promoting sustainable peace and unity among them for sustainable national development

At the event which was also attended by United Nations Resident Coordinator Madame Maria  Jose Torres, Mtambo said this commemoration is coming at a time when Government, with support from the UN, has completed the process of developing a Bill to formally establish the Malawi Peace and Unity Commission as a national pillar for peace building, social cohesion and conflict resolution. The Bill which in due course will be tabled in Parliament for enactment will see infrastructure for peace for Malawi rolled out. It will also see the Malawi Peace and Unity Commission and District Peace Committees established to work in collaboration with all stakeholders to ensure that the country remains peaceful and united.

The minister also pinpointed a number of areas that government through his ministry have been working on. He highlighted that The Department of Civic Education has been revamped to take on a more proactive role of coordinating transformative civic education and engagement of Malawians to participate in governance as a way of enhancing national unity and peace.  He also announced that a Department of National Unity has been established in the Ministry to work towards enhancement of national unity through promotion of patriotism, national identity, national symbols, and resolution of conflicts through collaborative means.  The Department is also housing the National Peace Architecture initiative, which was previously housed in the Office of President and Cabinet (OPC).

He reassured people that Tonse administration will do all it can to make sure that peace prevails not only in Malawi but throughout the SADC region as well.  Mtambo said the past hasn’t been pleasant as far as peace is concerned but that a new beginning is needed.

“I will not labour you to reflect on old history but let us critically look at our recent past. We all know that the birth of the third republic we are talking about today has been preceded by an unfair electoral process, court battles, nationwide protests, attacks and threats against human rights defenders and political opponents, mob justice, abuse of government institutions for selfish political interests, corruption and unequitable distribution of resources”. Mtambo said It is not a secret that Malawi national peace was threatened by such a background.

The minister took time to commend the UN Family in Malawi for the unwavering support that they continue to render towards the development of the country. The Ministry of Civic Education and National Unity has inherited a National Peace Architecture coordinating structure, which is wholly supported by the UN family in Malawi

International relations activist Mandindi hails President Chakwera Foreign policy pillars

A UK based Political Scientist and international relations expert Allan Mandindi has rated the president’s speech as very important  as it sets the tone for Malawi’s  future international relations. In his weekly radio address, President Dr Lazarus Chakwera  focused on Malawi’s international relations where he  said to nurture peaceful co-existence with other nations the country’s foreign policy ought to be anchored on three strong pillars.

In his speech President chakwera  said he will do everything possible to make the country live to its billing as ‘The Warm Heart of Africa’ which he described as an attribute to the country’s peaceable and friendly disposition. He also said  he will work towards cooperating with other countries so that Malawis development to be exponential, not incremental.

Making his commentary on what the president said Mandindi said “I applaud President Lazarus Chakwera for setting the right tone and giving a clear picture on Malawi’s Foreign policy. International relations plays a vital role in promoting economical, Geopolitical and developmental foundation of any nation, and seeing the president setting fundamental pillars of safeguarding Malawi’s national and developmental interests in the areas of Security, Intelligence, Economics, and Geopolitics. I see this as a great step towards making Malawi an effective and important actor in the international system and also gear us up for regional leadership of SADC in 2021”.

In his speech, President Chakwera announced that a list of the country’s global friends is growing,a thing which Mandindi acknowledged that suggest  foreign governments have positive feeling about Malawi and its new  leadership.  Mandindi seconded the President on the need of working together  with other nations to foster  development  of not only Malawi but Africa as a whole.

“Indeed our country can accomplish more by working together with other nations than on our own and we can benefit alot through cooperation with other nations in areas of technology, global security and even common approach towards global threats like pandemics and international terrorism, not forgetting war on cyber security”added Mandindi.

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera says to nurture peaceful co-existence with other nations the country’s foreign policy ought to be anchored on three strong pillars. The President was speaking at Kamuzu Palace in the Capital City, Lilongwe, through the ninth weekly radio address.

The Malawi leader said he will do everything possible to make the country live to its billing as ‘The Warm Heart of Africa’ which he described as an attribute to the country’s peaceable and friendly disposition. “Both as a person and as President, I see the world as a global family of equal members with a common origin and distinct histories and cultures that make everyone’s place and participation in global affairs indispensable.

“Therefore, my intent is to maintain contact and dialogue with any nation that welcomes diplomacy as catalyst for peace,” said Chakwera.

The President said the synergistic effect that comes by cooperating with other countries will be advanced.

He said: “The second pillar of our foreign policy is safeguarding Malawi’s national and developmental interests in the areas of security, economics, and geopolitics. I believe we will accomplish more for our nation by working together with other nations than on our own.

“This is not because we lack capacity, but because we want our nation’s development to be exponential, not incremental.”

As an indication that Government has taken a right direction in clearing the ‘rubble’ in governance systems, the President  said a list of the country’s global friends is growing.

The Malawi leader said his Administration will use military innovation and intelligence to ensure no inch of the sovereign territory of the country is encroached.

For this reason Chakwera will engage with heads of neighbouring countries to ensure there’s a win-win outcome.

“Considering that all three of our neighboring countries are several times larger than us and that our peoples share a common cultural heritage, I look forward to engaging my counterparts in Zambia, Tanzania, and Mozambique in finding win-win methods of keeping our shared borders secure,” said the President.

In the weekly radio broadcast Chakwera also made mentioned  that all is set to make his  inaugural United Nationd General Assembly (UNGA) address.

Contrary to the tradition that all heads of state have to gather in New York City this summer for UNGA meetings, this  time around due to prevalence of COVID-19, the Malawi leader also in capacity as Chairperson for 47 Least Developed Countries (LDCs) will join the meeting virtually and champion the agenda of the country and the LDCs.

The need for Kamuzu’s Chiwengo village rehabilitation into Malawi Tourism attraction

By Allan Mandindi

Despite some bad publicity that was painted on Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda, Malawi’s first President. His contribution to Africa and Malawi is something we should all not underlook but be proud of. Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda is one of great African sons that pushed for independence of many African countries including Nyasaland and Rhodesia.

He is well appreciated within the Pan African circle and he appears in so many African Historical publications and even at the Headquarters of institutions like the African Union the portrait of Dr Banda appears in the lobby, this show how great his contribution to the Pan African movement was. As Malawi with the new Tonse administration under Dr Lazarus Chakwera is geared up to open up the economy.

There is a need to look at areas we can utilise to attract tourists some might be academic tourists that would love to understand and appreciate the history of people like Dr. Banda. We have historical land marks in Kasungu, the beautiful history of the Chiwengo village up to Nguluyanawambe. The Kamuzu Mausoleum and the Malawi Congress Party Headquarters. All these sites are part of the rich Malawi Heritage and need to get government support to help attract tourist to Malawi.

Chiwengo, looking dilapidated and need rehabilitation

Chiwengo Village in Kasungu is where the first president of Malawi Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda was born. This area is historical and needs serious rehabilitation work so it can attract tourists.

Dr Ken Zikhale Ng’oma:Pushing for Chiwengo to be tourist hub

We applaud people like Hon Zikhale Ng’oma who have been lobbying for Chiwengo Village to be rehabilitated. Its a beautiful area with street lights. This is the souvenir Dr. Banda left us so we can pass on to future generations. He left a legacy that we cannot afford to let it die but rather candle it so that the future generation can appreciate.
