Malawi’s national women’s football team, the Scorchers, have moved within touching distance of the quarter-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after securing an impressive 3-1 victory over Egypt in Morocco.
The win was Malawi’s second consecutive triumph in Group C, taking the Scorchers to six points from two matches. They have now scored six goals while conceding just three, putting them at the top of the group standings.
Rose Smith Kadzere opened the scoring in the 31st minute after being set up by Temwa Chawinga, giving Malawi a deserved lead following a lively attacking display.
Faith Chimzimu doubled the advantage deep into first-half stoppage time, sending the Scorchers into the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Malawi maintained their momentum after the restart, with Temwa Chawinga netting her third goal of the tournament in the 68th minute. The striker finished off a fine pass from Rose Smith Kadzere, who was later named Player of the Match for her outstanding performance.
Egypt pulled one goal back through Eman Hassan with 10 minutes remaining, but the late strike was not enough to deny Malawi a famous victory.
The Scorchers could seal qualification for the quarter-finals if Zambia defeat Nigeria or if the two teams play to a draw. However, should Nigeria win, Malawi’s fate will be decided in their final Group C match against Zambia on August 5.
Reaching the semi-finals of the tournament will also secure qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, giving the Scorchers even greater motivation as they continue their impressive campaign.
