As one way of strengthening food security, Seed Co Malawi Limited has launched climate-smart crop varieties to helping farmers adapt to changing weather conditions.
The newly launched varieties include SC449-Kanyani an early-maturing hybrid maize seed developed for drought resilience and quicker harvesting, and SC 657 – Mkango.

According to the company’s Managing Director, Boyd Luwe, the new seed varieties were developed in response to increasing climate-related challenges affecting agricultural production in the region, including prolonged dry spells linked to El Niño conditions.
Luwe says the maize hybrid SC449 joins its growing portfolio of ultra-early and early maturity seed varieties designed to support climate-smart farming practices, improve yields, and enhance drought tolerance among farmers.
He adds that the introduction of resilient seed varieties forms part of broader efforts to promote sustainable agriculture and strengthen food and nutrition security in vulnerable farming communities.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Thoko Tembo, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to paterner with private companies like Seed Co to ensure that local farmers use hybrid crops for bumper harvest.
