The cyclical circus of Malawian politics: The perennial amnesia of the ruling Elite

By Rick Dzida

The political landscape of Malawi stands as a tragic monument to human hubris, an unceasing carousel of collective amnesia where megalomaniacal politicians continuously refuse to internalize the stark lessons of antiquity.

For generations, a rapacious political class has erroneously conceptualised the state as a sovereign fiefdom. They remain tragically oblivious to an immutable historical truth: the righteous indignation of a disenfranchised electorate will inevitably orchestrate their spectacular downfall.

The grand illusion of perpetual autocracy first shattered when an exhausted populace, suffocating under decades of tyrannical subjugation, rose in defiant mutiny against the draconian dictator Kamuzu Banda.

Bingu Mutharika

When domestic and international condemnation rained upon his iron-fisted assembly, the Ngwazi arrogantly quoted Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar from the legislative podium, barking with supreme impunity: “There is no terror, Cassius, in your threats.”

Yet, citizens protested, bled, and perished in a heroic crusade to dismantle that very terror.

In a watershed moment of democratic awakening, Bakili Muluzi vanquished Banda in a historic general election in 1994, forcefully evicting the monolithic Malawi Congress Party (MCP) from the corridors of state power.

This monumental ouster proved, unequivocally, that no tyrant is insulated from popular retribution.

Yet, the intoxicating vapours of absolute authority instantly blinded the successor regime.

Upon exhausting his constitutionally mandated two-term tenure, Bakili Muluzi attempted a blasphemous mutilation of the supreme law to facilitate an unconstitutional extension.

Defending his desperate tenure at public rallies, Muluzi scoffed at democratic limits with audacious entitlement: “Who wants to rule a country for only eight years? You don’t just change governments the way you change clothes. No, No, No!”

When donors and citizens recoiled, he roared that “this country is not controlled by donors. Never!”

But the populace revolted, fiercely championing institutional constitutionalism over narcissistic individual ambition.

Thwarted and desperate to preserve his proxy influence, Muluzi handpicked Bingu wa Mutharika to serve as a pliant puppet.

In a magnificent stroke of Machiavellian irony, Mutharika shattered his master’s puppet strings, summarily abandoned his sponsoring patrons, and birthed the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

History unsparingly weaponized its lessons when Joyce Banda ascended to the presidency following Mutharika’s sudden demise.

Blindsided by a catastrophic delusion of grandeur, she faced the volcanic public fury of the devastating Cashgate corruption scandals while piously declaring to the global media: “I will not shield anyone… We must have zero tolerance against corruption.”

Despite her belated investigative gesticulations, the electorate mercilessly flagellated her administration at the ballot box, unceremoniously exiling her from power and elevating Bingu’s brother directly from the opposition benches in 2014.

The MCP’s subsequent resurrection was by no means an endorsement of their unilateral strength; the party suffered a succession of humiliating electoral defeats under both John Tembo and Lazarus Chakwera.

It was exclusively via the alchemical genius of the Tonse Alliance, engineered by Saulos Chilima, that the MCP was dragged back into executive governance in 2020.

Once entrenched, however, the administration grew profoundly deaf, castigating any righteous dissent as treasonous sabotage.

Prior to 2025 general elections,a desperate Chakwera resorted to sycophantic supplication, broadcasting desperate public pleas for forgiveness regarding chronic fuel scarcities, hyper-inflationary living costs, and unchecked plunder.

In a display of unadulterated, breathtaking audacity, the party’s publicity apparatus, Jessie Kabwila, has already begun floating overtures for a desperate new electoral alliance ahead of future ballots, expecting a citizenry they systematically impoverished and ignored to blindly extend their collective trust once more.

In the contemporary era, this political malignancy has metastasized into an even more insidious form.

The DPP regime has successfully captured both the legislature and the judiciary, executing a hostile takeover of the parliamentary’s oversight mechanisms.

They have systematically suffocated independent parliamentary inquests into cataclysmic electricity blackouts, low tobacco sales, and high-ranking state officials systematically looting millions of kwacha from public coffers.

Malawian politicians remain pathologically unteachable. They continue to plunder, betray, and manipulate under the narcissistic delusion that their dominion is eternal.

Yet, the ledger of history in Malawi remains flawless: the collective memory of the voter is long, the societal breaking point is absolute, and a swift, merciless day of reckoning is racing toward them. DPP and Mkulukutamoyo, watch out!!!
