By Chisomo Phiri

Standard Bank Chief Executive (CEO) Phillip Madinga says the bank’s K35 million sponsorship of the Association of Teaching English in Malawi (ATEM) national drama finals set to take place this weekend at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe reflects its commitment to supporting youth development in the country through arts and education.

Speaking during the sponsorship cheque presentation on Thursday in Lilongwe,Madinga said drama plays a key role in helping learners build confidence, strengthen communication skills, and develop critical thinking, while also giving young people a platform to express themselves and tell their own stories.

“This initiative empowers young Malawians to tell their own stories and contribute to shaping the future of the country,” he said.

On his part,ATEM President Davie Mpaso said 12 secondary schools will compete for the 2026 national title after progressing through months of regional competitions that involved 120 schools across the country.

Mpaso also commended Standard Bank for its sponsorship, saying the support has boosted participation and encouraged schools to produce high-quality performances.

The national finals are expected to attract students, educators, arts enthusiasts, and corporate partners from across the country, as schools compete for top honours in this year’s edition.
