The number of Malawians returning home from South Africa has risen to 59,931 as the repatriation exercise approaches its expected completion date.
The figure has been released by the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) as the government-led operation continues to facilitate the return of Malawians from South Africa.
According to a letter signed by DoDMA Commissioner Wilson Moleni, the number of returnees is expected to increase further before the exercise concludes on August 12, 2026.
The latest figures include men, women, children under the age of five, pregnant women and people requiring assistance.
Men account for the largest proportion of those who have returned to Malawi, with 40,803 recorded so far.
The figures demonstrate the scale of the ongoing operation as authorities continue to receive Malawians arriving from South Africa.
DoDMA has been coordinating with various organisations and other stakeholders to ensure that returning Malawians receive the necessary assistance upon arrival.
The department has also acknowledged the contribution of organisations that have supported the repatriation exercise.
It further thanked individuals who have participated in efforts to assist the returnees and ensure that the exercise progresses smoothly.
The repatriation comes amid continued efforts to bring Malawians back home from South Africa, where some migrants have faced pressure linked to undocumented migration and anti-immigration sentiments.
With the exercise expected to end on August 12, authorities are continuing to monitor the number of people arriving in Malawi.
DoDMA has encouraged all stakeholders involved in the operation to continue working together as the country receives the returning Malawians.
